possible diagram/uml?
I'm trying to use Cacti, and so far my experience has been less than stellar, but I do see the potential. I'm using perl scripts to run all sorts of random things and I'm using the output from that to graph things.
I was curious if there might be some charts/diagrams of the basic work-flow when adding a new graph from scratch.
and/or
Are there some diagrams of how the pieces connect. For instance, how do Data Input Methods relate to a Data Source and Data Template, and when do I need to use a template, etc.
If this is already out there then please link me, and if it's not already out there then someone who knows the system should be awesome and hook us up!

Lots is on the documentation site. For example: http://docs.cacti.net/manual:087:2_basi ... _operation

I'll put a vote in for this too. I still have no idea how exactly some of the parts fit together.
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)

no, not a diagram of the database or rrd. just a diagram of how the different data/graph objects work together.gandalf wrote:If I only understand what you're heading for. I'm not against graphics, but what do you need? You're not searching for a database diagramm, don't you?
R.
things i would like to see in the diagram are:
Data Input Method
Data Template
Graph Template
Data Source
Data Query
etc.
Also, I would like to know how all of these pieces find their way into the final graph. I think I have a grasp on all of it right now, but it just seems like so many channels to go through just to get my script output into a graph.
All of these things. And more specifically, as they pertain to SCRIPT Data Inputs. I am using scripts to gather the data, in the format of <dataname>:<data> <dataname>:<data>

I would like a diagram also
I think what most people are looking for is a logic diagram for how it all fits together. For example, I spent the better part of a couple of hours wondering why I could not get my GraphTemplate to show up in the available list on the Devices -> myDevice -> Associated Graph Templates. After messing around with some of the built-in GraphTemplates, I have narrowed down that if a Data Query is associated with a GraphTemplate, then your GraphTemplate doesn't need to show up in the Device's page, but the documentation does not make that clear, at least to me.
I would be willing to start the process if you could tell me what would best. Visio? JPG? etc.
One other thing that I still don't understand is the Suggested Values in the graph template. The instructions are not clear, in fact, the screenshots are opposite of the text.
Other than some documentation issues, this product is extremely flexible and much easier to use than MRTG.

Indeed. And a related thing would be: my other thread - how would I tell from a graph what data contributed to it, and how it was collected?

This is a perfect example of why a nice diagram of how it all fits would be beneficial.ScottLundberg wrote:I think what most people are looking for is a logic diagram for how it all fits together. I finally got my graphs working, but now i'm realizing that there are certain things that are great to be in a Data Template, but some things that just won't work.
Also, I'm realizing that the DataSource can hold a lot of output fields, and then I can create multiple graphs from the one DataSource. I didn't know this before, and a diagram would have helped me realize this in advance.
Re: possible diagram/uml?
Hi,
For a master's degree course (evening classes) I’m looking for any Cacti UML diagrams like:
• Use case diagrams.
• Class diagrams.
• Component diagrams.
• Object diagrams.
In my daily job (network admin) I use Cacti. Therefore Cacti is a great study object for me! It would be great if a Cacti developer has some diagrams around which I could use for my study.
Thank you!

I'm quite sure that there are none. At least I don't know them
