Just out of curiosity, why does netmrtg look so similar to cacti, and why does their discussion board look very similar to cacti, and why do the programs seem to do pretty much the same thing? I can see arriving at similar solutions to a similar problem, but none the less, there's a lot of unexplained similarities (well, unexplained from the point of view of someone who's been exclusively using MRTG for years).

Seems like one of cacti or netmrtg would have *something* up somewhere explaining the similarity (other than just a link from one to the other)...

Things tend to start looking generic in the PHP-driven world, I'll give ya that. Take phpNuke and all of its clones/derivitives for instance, and the websites that use them. 
NetMRG seems to take on a lot of the same functionality of cacti, but doesn't looks quite as good and I don't think their poller is as heavy-duty as cactid for instance.
As far as why there is no explanation on either site... couldn't tell ya. I doubt either team is obligated to explain why the other exists? heh
The forums are the same because they're both using phpBB -- a very popular (free) message board software. Tons of sites use it.

I dunno, it just seems like there are so many similarities that it wouldn't be surprising to see that it was some kind of mailing list disagreement and subsequent fork, etc. I got a feeling like netsaint/nagios or similar. NetMRTG does provide a link to the cacti site, though.

Wasn't aware that cacti's graph tree editing was broken -- elaborate? 
I'm not sure which product came first or even which product is superior, but they do say that emulation is the highest form of flattery (both seem to be from as early as ~2001 though).
Looks like they do have a C++ poller for NetMRG, but their graph tree looks pretty ghetto compared to cacti's.

Anyway, I was hoping for some sordid details of a rogue developer striking out from the project. This whole "they're pretty similar out of coincidence" thing is really disappointing.
