Windows 2008 64bit install files
I apologize in advance for my ineptness. I swear I have used the search as well as browsed the different forms and website but cannot find the miscellaneous files that are needed for running Cacti on Windows Server 2008 64 bit. The 32 bit versions are easy enough to find, am I supposed to be using the 32 bit versions? I believe I read that the Windows Installer would not work on 64 bit because of different version of all the files which leads me to believe that I am not supposed to use the 32 bit that I have found. Thanks!
Until there are official 64bit versions of mysql, apache and php -- there will not be a cacti installer for it. Yes, searching the net you can find 3rd party compiled 64bit versions of all the pieces of software cacti needs.
Conversely, no one has documented any performance gains for Cacti for 32 bs 64bit systems. Yes, I bet one can find benchmarks for apache, mysql, and php comparing them though -- one can extrapolate the performance gains Cacti might see.

I'm not sure if I came off as being a smart a$$ or if I'm just reading too much into your post...I promise you I am writing this completely humble and not a clue as to what I'm doing.
What I do know is that this product appears to do things with some of the devices that we use that no other software does. So...Does your post mean that because we are using the 64bit version that we can't use Cacti? If there IS a way of making it work (unofficially), I am more than willing to do some leg work to get this going, but if other people have already figured it out I would love some direction as I am pretty clueless at this point.

I personally haven't set up a Cacti install on a 64bit OS yet. I believe one can still use the 32bit components (namely rrdtool, mysql, php, net-snmp, and apache if desired) and the 64bit OS will run them fine. It of course is preferable to use 64bit compiled version of everything due to performance gains. Net-SNMP is only required for SNMPv3 devices.
I assume you've searched the windows forum for others who have tried going the 64bit route?

Ok, I've been racking my head on this one and think I'm close. I took a combination of directions from the instructions here and the 64bit instructions/downloads from here http://www.elxis.org/guides/developers- ... ndows.html. I'm trying to document my install as much as possible to hopefully help others having similar problems.
I think I almost have it going, but when I try to pull up cacti in the web browser, I end up getting a network timeout error. If I substitute the included index.php with a test index.php, the test opens. A couple of things to note is that IIS is disabled and port 80 is being used by another program that I can't really change. So I'm running Apache and the port is 1234. I'm assuming the problem is in either my httpd.conf or my php.ini so I included them here in case anyone has any thoughts.

# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/httpd-2.2-x64" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/httpd-2.2-x64/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.
#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/apache64"
#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.

; WARNING ;
;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About php.ini ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
; | bitwise OR
; & bitwise AND
; ~ bitwise NOT
; ! boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
;
;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About this file ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; All the values in the php.ini-dist file correspond to the builtin
; defaults (that is, if no php.ini is used, or if you delete these lines,
; the builtin defaults will be identical).
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Language Options ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

; setting this directive to On. If you wish to limit the size of the buffer
; to a certain size - you can use a maximum number of bytes instead of 'On', as

; example, if you set output_handler to "mb_output_handler", character

; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
; is doing.
; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"

; Transparent output compression using the zlib library
; Valid values for this option are 'off', 'on', or a specific buffer size

session.save_handler = files
; Argument passed to save_handler. In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
;
; As of PHP 4.0.1, you can define the path as:
;
session.save_path = "C:/tmp"
;
; where N is an integer. Instead of storing all the session files in
; /path, what this will do is use subdirectories N-levels deep, and
; store the session data in those directories. This is useful if you
; or your OS have problems with lots of files in one directory, and is
; a more efficient layout for servers that handle lots of sessions.
;
; NOTE 1: PHP will not create this directory structure automatically.
; You can use the script in the ext/session dir for that purpose.
; NOTE 2: See the section on garbage collection below if you choose to
; use subdirectories for session storage
;
; The file storage module creates files using mode 600 by default.

1) Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about IIS (seems the reason for turning it off was because the other software didn't like IIS7 and we didn't need for anything else on this server). Regardless, the way this server is setup was not done by me, and will take quite some doing to change everything else around.BSOD2600 wrote:1) you know IIS can run on alternative ports too .

Possible, I'm logged in as a Domain Admin and I've added everything I can think of and gave it all Full Access.

Not sure why I had a foward slash (slip i guess), changed to your suggestion with no change.
What do the apache logs show when you try to load the cacti index.php page?
This seemed to be the most relevant information:
I Googled the line "Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting." and found this forum http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=381549 which led to http://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopi ... 16&t=32617 which in turn leads to a download from http://windows.php.net. I don't mind trying it, but knowing that I've gone down the 64bit path with these installs, adding 32bit pieces seem like I take a big chance of screwing things up more than they are. What are your thoughts?
One last thing....I ran process monitor like the instructions in one of the HOW-TOs here and did not get any php things to show up. The only thing that showed up in the filtered list was svchost entries.
Thanks for your continued support.

I changed my php.ini again and made the error_reporting to only E_ALL and I capitalized the "O" in "log_errors=On" (can't imagine that was doing anything, but did it anyways.). I ended up getting a PHP error log.
I'm guessing this is permission problem, any idea where to start?

Lack of the ability to store Cookies is usually a permission problem with the session.save_path, which is c:\tmp for you. The Apache service account have modify permissions on that folder?

I am getting session files in the C:\TMP folder but they are empty. I added every "user"/permission I could think of with full access. I don't seem to be getting anything else in the php error log, although I question if it is working again. Apache log shows same message as I have been having. I feel that "Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting." is probably my big hurdle at this point. Majority of Google results don't seem to apply to what is going on with our system. I checked the apache service and it is running under Local Account and I'm logged in as Domain Admin.
We have to be close.
We have to be close.
The sess_* files are empty? That's odd, since they should contain text about the session... far as I know, the Apache service account should have NTFS Modify permissions on that folder.
