creating graph from custom script help needed

I have created a simple php script to generate the random numbers and generate the graph. when i run as php i get the output but when i run in cacti it is not generating the output. I have followed the Simplest Method of Going from Script to Graph. pls guide me on this.
This i have done as a test to develop further. i would also appreciate if anyone can answer me whether i can use the datainput method for getting data from the database to generate graph. Do i have to create XML files.

I get an empty graph without any data. In the logs i get the out put as U.

Yes I did follow. Now I when i run the poller using the command line it is opeing the file. i mean the file is opened instead of executing. But when I rung the file using the IE i get the result. Thanks in adavnce
