Hi,
After struggling with google for a several days, I came here trying to find out a solution or at least a explanation about cacti's strange behaviour...
I'm a working in a computer/network company and i've to "update" their supervision stuff (the aim is to have nagios, ocs inventory and cacti working fine)
They all ready have this configuration but with old versions and (too) old configuration, that's why i would like to install all this softs on a brand new machine, with great new configuration.
old one :
OS : Debian 3.1
cacti : 0.8.6c-7sarge4
new one :
OS : Debian Lenny (5.0)
cacti : 0.8.7b
The issue :
The old one is able to ping a fortigate (kinda switch/router/firewall/way_less_cool_than_iptables) and graph it...
With the new one I can udp ping my computer, the server(monitoring the localhost actually), but none of the other network devices like this great fortigate...
I tryed udp ping... timeout... (1)
snmp only... (2)
icmp ping... cannot create socket... (3)
(1) tryed to patch... I must have done something wrong, cause it "did not find the file to patch", i provided it some .php in order to "try"... useless
<strike>(2) the host is "down" and stay "down"</strike>
(2) working fine
(3) I set uid (chmod +s) on many... so many /cacti/ *.php and it still cannot...
plus there is no such thing as /etc/init.d/cacti for this version.
Even if the snmp host detection is working, it is important for me to know how/why neither of the ping (udp, tcp, icmp) are working
Well I think i've finished, i hoped you liked what you've read and that someone could help a tired GNU/Linux lover to finish his internship quietly...
btw sorry for my english... i'm french
[solved] 0.8.7b host detection / ping pb

As I told you, I installed the latest version of cacti (0.8.7d) and patched it...
It works !
It's still not graphin' but... it looks to be a well known issue, so I'll go back googling for while.
Anyway, the "ping" problem is solved, so i guess the topic could be modified to [resolved].
Thanks for your help.
