Blank graphs ... poller may not be working

I have installed Cacti as specified in the documentation but do now see any graphs. I can log into cacti with no problem and add users, etc. so I know that some stuff is getting into the database. If I try and run the poller script, I get the following message:

FATAL: Cannot connect to MySQL server on 'localhost'. Please make sure you have specified a valid MySQL database name in 'include/config.php'

I know that I can connect to the database with the U/N and P/W defined. Help please!!!

Are you using spine or cmd.php as a poller?
