Can't get data from other machines

Post by mrthedon »

I've just installed Cacti, and am having problems getting data from other remote machines...

I see that I have the error "SNMP error" under the snmp information section for each host.

I'm assuming that something needs to be running (an snmp client?) on each machine for Cacti to be able to query and recieve data, correct?

I have an NT machine that seems to be responding with out me having to do anything to it, but my remote FreeBSD boxes I'm trying to get information from are giving me no love...

(I am also having problems with one remote NT machine that is firewalled - I just need to pass UDP 161 through - nothing else - correct?)

What (if anything) needs to be done to these remote FBSD hosts in order for me to monitor them?

Sorry if I seem pretty miss-informed on this topic. Never really used SNMP before, nor have I do any extensive remote monitoring (other than Big Brother).

I've been playing around with Cacti for the last 12 hours or so trying to get this thing working proporly and now it's time for sleep :)

Hopefully some suggestions when I wake up?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

each machine that you want to monitor needs to have the SNMP Daemon running... on FreeBSD it can be found in the ports collection at /usr/ports/net-mgmt/net-snmp or you can pkg_add -r net-snmp , then enable it by adding snmpd_enable="YES" to your /etc/rc.conf. this will make sure snmpd runs on the next reboot, and its pretty much all the config that needs to be done. enjoy.

Still not having any luck... I've installed the daemon on multiple hosts and I'm not getting anything from anyone... The machine that that is running Cacti is behind a firewall... Do I need to have any outside ports passed into it for this to work right?

Also, some of the hosts I'm trying to monitor (some, not all) are on DSL/cable connections. Is there any chance that some of the computers I'm trying to monitor could be blocked by their respective ISPs?

*Sigh* I really like the way Cacti is setup, but if I can't get it to work, I don't know what I can really do...

Any ideas would be helpful...
