After going through many postings in this forum, I have the foll. ques.

Is it a must to use Unix/Linux for Cacti??

Does XP provide less features than the rest for using Cacti??

How do I install Perl on my XP macohine as I am getting an error like "perl is not recognized as an internal/external command, batch file" ???

I installed active perl from that website. Is perl up and running now automatically ??

You don't need Perl, though it is nice to have if you plan on doing any scripting.

Delete the localhost device from your installation (it is for Unix based systems only) and the errors should go away.

now I am getting SNMP error. I was tryting to plot bits/sec graph for my laptop (has XP on it).

As far as the answer to your original question. Cacti can work when running on a Windows platform. I'm using it to poll my Windows servers and am running the console from a Windows 2003 Server.

I'm not sure if there are any feature differences between Cacti on one OS to the Other as I haven't tried it on Linux/Unix.

While I'm only polling SNMP objects except a couple of canned queries that work well for my needs (network and disk). The rest of my polls are done purely to SNMP using an agent from SNMPInformant.

The product is working very well for us at this point. The poller included with the latest version isn't as fast as I'll need once I begin to fully deploy this but there is an improvement in Beta right now that resolves that issue (can't wait for it to be released prod)


Are you able to get an SNMP response from your XP laptop using a different utility (like GetIf)?
