cacti not sharing the load

Post by tephra »

Hi Guys,

as you can see from these stats it appears as though Cacti isn't load balancing the DS requests:

06/13/2008 10:34:06 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:65.3387 Method:spine Processes:15 Threads:10 Hosts:2325 HostsPerProcess:155 DataSources:1386 RRDsProcessed:861
06/13/2008 10:32:57 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:56.7961 Method:spine Processes:15 Threads:10 Hosts:2325 HostsPerProcess:155 DataSources:84 RRDsProcessed:55
06/13/2008 10:31:57 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:56.7737 Method:spine Processes:15 Threads:10 Hosts:2325 HostsPerProcess:155 DataSources:73 RRDsProcessed:44
06/13/2008 10:30:57 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:56.2802 Method:spine Processes:15 Threads:10 Hosts:2325 HostsPerProcess:155 DataSources:80 RRDsProcessed:51
06/13/2008 10:29:59 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:56.7063 Method:spine Processes:15 Threads:10 Hosts:2325 HostsPerProcess:155 DataSources:99 RRDsProcessed:70

861 onetime, vs 55 or 44 another time...

Shouldn't spine/cacti be balancing the DS's so that we are spreading the load?

Cheers
D.

Are you using different polling intervals for your data sources?

yes, about 100 are on 5min interval, the remaining 2200 are on 15min intervals.

so I was hoping that cacti would split the 2200ish into 146 (2200/15) and poll those 146 every 1 minute.

but it doesn't seem to work that way?

No, definitively it does NOT work that way. It will poll all 15min devices at the same interval. There's no such thing as a "polling offset" until now
