[SOLVED] Cannot Create RRD Files

Post by newmanity »

I've pulling my hair out here.

I ran into problems with cacti (which was working fine with a few hosts) and decided to reinstall everything, including ubuntu. Even though I've followed every re-installation step exactly as the first time, I am now unable to get anything. It is obviously a problem with the poller, as my devices are always now reading "unknown", but nothing is ever being written to the rra directory, no matter what mods I make to the crontab file or chowns of the cacti directory.

I've tried the "Debug NaN's in your graphs" section of the manual, which leaves you hanging if the RRD files are not being created. When I create a device, you can see that it is up in that stage and snmp is grabbing lots of data, but nothing in the rra directory....

PLEASE HELP. Many people seem to have had this issue, but the forums are filled with unanswered problems when it comes to this issue.

What are permissions of the rra directory? Which user is running the poller from crontab? What happens, if you su tothat user and manually run poller.php?

Figured it out

Post by newmanity »

I finally realized what I did wrong. I guess I did do something different on the first install. Every time I imported the cacti.sql file into the MySQL database apart from the first time, I was running it (without realizing it) as root, and not my general user name. I tried to change the permissions nonetheless, and it never worked. But after re-installing cacti and importing the sql file as a regular user, I no longer have any issues...it took me a whole day to figure it out, though!

Thanks.

Due to the lack of PHP SNMP in the XAMPP install, I had to reinstall everything from scratch, and leave XAMPP behind. Wouldn't you know I ran into the inability to create .rrd files in the rra directory again, and my little manoeuvre above did nothing to help me. I finally came across a step by step set of instructions that solved my problems, and I highly, highly recommend it:

I installed Cacti 7b on Ubuntu Gutsy (actually, linux mint daryna), and it worked like a charm...a real lifesaver.

All cacti related issues seem to exactly match the documentation available at http://docs.cacti.net.
Are you able to specify which part of the docs you referred to was solving your specific problem? I'd like to add this to the docs

I can't say, as I was only interested in getting it working...what specifically was causing the problem I'm not sure. Although as I could never seem to have access to writing rrd files, it may have something to do with the specific instructions on modifying the mysql user permissions. The crontab is without a user also, but I'm guessing here. All i know is that it works, and many people who have had the same problem I've had would benefit from the step by step above.
