Just a lilttle question about Cacti...

Hello,

I would like to monitoring "professionally" my Internet connection and measure the network latency(HTTP, DNS..) and QoS. Actually, I want to create an "automaton" which simulate the behavior of an Internet-User.

So can i use Cacti to do that?

I have a machine under Windows XP Pro. I see that there are a lot of scripts but for UNIX. So how can i adapt these scripts for windows? And can i write my own scripts? (in what language ? )

But I just want to do some pings to measure network latency for example
I want a free-based solution for this. I want a snapshot of the Internbet connection in the point of view of the user...

How can i do this ??

with cacti, you can to your latency measurings, traffic, dns-server usage/capacity...

you can also write your own scripts (you need to in some cases..)
(for windows, use vbscript,jscript (WSH) or perl - of course batch-files will also work.. but they're borin)

The adaption of Unix-Scripts is usually only with appropriate changes possible..

I don't know what you mean with "a snapshot of the internet connection"..
mesure the networkspeed between the internet (.. a specific internet-server) and your LAN.. ?
can you state it a little bit more precisely..

Precisely, I want to build a to build an "automaton" (which simulate an internet user) to test and measure the QoS of an Internet Connection!

For example, It will send HTTP request, simulate FTP tranfer, DNS query and0 measure the latency of these responses.

So I must write some scripts for my needs and use some templates...
I wonder if i can use some add-on of RRDTool like SmokePing with Cacti(for the reporting)...

So i need some help to do this automaton with cacti !!

hmm... cacti only collects and displays statistically data..
this part will work..

=> you have to use other tools for the traffic creation....
perhaps some of the Guru's know a tool..
(cat /dev/urandom |nc your_boss'_pc 445)

I'm able to get the traffic per qos-group from my 3com switches...
it's worth a try to read the mibfiles..
