[SOLVED] Change polled device but keep the same IP

Post by mturczan »

Folks,

I was wondering if anyone could point to an answer to this question:

If I have a data switch that I'm monitoring and I swap the device out with another manufacturer's data switch, but keep the same IP address on the new device, will I still be able to access the historically collected data from the first device and associated with the same interfaces on the new device?

I'm assuming that you can't because all it would take is for the snmp ifindex to renumber itself and now your collecting data from different ifindex numbers.

Regards,

Mark

This is very tricky at best. The real problem is mapping the old RRD's to the new ones between polling cycles. You could likely write a script to rename the files based upon information in the database. Unless you can get someone here to help, you would be on your own though.

TheWitness,

Thanks for the reply. I figured that it would be tough, and I'm of the opinion that it would be easier just to add the new replacement device with a new IP address and keep the data separate.
