request: Template request for Juniper NS50

Post by CaliChaos »

Thanks to the great work in the Windows beta installer, I am up and running and graphing like it is going out of style!!

I have two Juniper NS50s I am trying to graph data from. Does anyone have a template they would like to share?

Thanks everyone for their continued hard work making Caci the best damn thing since 640K.

Nothing too 'wild' or 'crazy'.

The basics like protocol traffic, bytes in/out combine bandwidth, all interfaces - the generic stuff.

Maybe VPN traffic
Maybe Policy stats

Really though I just want the bandwidth information.

Have you checked the standard interface stats ?

Post by chrisgapske »

That should be included in the base cacti install.

check the Documentation section above.

But when you add a device you should be able to click on add graphs at the top of the screen and than select the interfaces you want to graph than select the type of graph you want from the drop down and click go/ok and it should create these graphs for you.

Do you have the snmp information setup right on your switch/router?

When you try to add the device in cacti does the hostname and system name show up on the top left or does it say snmp error ?

SNMP error - not sure why I didnt see it before.

Looked at the documentation to setup a communityon the Juniper.. but it seems like it wants to collect SNMP data for workstations.. not give SNMP data about itself. So while this has now turned into a Juniper configuration question and not a Cacti problem --- any suggestions?

Thanks for the quick replies.

I don't use them but I did find some examples on the internet.

basic search at junipers website.
http://kb.juniper.net/?ui_mode=question ... s50%20snmp

I think this is what you are looking for.

To setup SNMP management.

http://kb.juniper.net/CUSTOMERSERVICE/i ... c3c1903613

Than you will need to go here to setup the interfaces.

http://kb.juniper.net/CUSTOMERSERVICE/KB4118

This is more information.

http://kb.juniper.net/CUSTOMERSERVICE/i ... c3c19015cd

link to Netscreen 50 admin pdf
http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardwar ... /ug_50.pdf

I think this should get you where you need to go.

Hi

If you run sub interfaces on your netscreen you may want to use these templates which I created for Netscreens.

http://forums.cacti.net/about11064.html

The default snmp interface graphs that come with Cacti don't pick up sub interfaces.

Also search the forums for other Netscreen stats - memory cpu etc.

There is a list of nearly all templates here

Hi

SNMP is easy to set up on the Netscreens.

If you are using the GUI do the following

configuration - report settings - snmp - new community

Then fill in the following information

Community Name - <community string>
Permissions - you will see the following permissions ticked. I usually untick the write box as you don't need write access to the firewall.
Write
Trap
Including Traffic Alarms

Then add your hosts that you want to be able to access the Netscreen via SNMP. I have 2 hosts here one for your Cacti server and one for our WUG server.

Click Ok and your away.

This is taken from a NS25 running still running 4.0. If you are running later versions you may also see some additional fields.

Version field under the permissions - I use any
Trap Version after your hosts - I use V2c
Source interface - I use the trusted interface even at remote sites as I monitor them over VPN tunnels.

Hope this helps

I think this may be the key.. I added the device itself as a host.. not the monitoring server... OOOPS.

As of 5 minus ago.. still SNMP error on the device.. waiting the standard 10 minutes to see it it clears up.

Thanks again.

Oh yeah.. how do i import the Juniper template.. my drop down list does not show a Juniper template.

Hi

Download the templates from the forums. I find that the templates show up in a new browser window. I copy the data from the window and paste it into the box within Cacti which says "Import Template from Text". If you see any errors it may be due to errors within xml. I usually paste the template to an XML editor, I use Architag Xray editor. I find that its the - at the beginning of fields. Once I remove the - and re import it works.

Sometimes the templates require the use of a data query. This will require an xml file which needs to be put within one of your cacti folders. There are normally instructions for these type of templates on what to do.

Not sure why SNMP isn't working. Is the firewall you are trying to connect behind another firewall?? Is there any NAT going on between Cacti and the firewall you are trying to get too?

No NAT no additional firewall.

I tried the Interface 1 (inside LAN ip)
I tried the Interface 3 (outside internet IP)

No go. I have two devices.. and the same problem on both.. so what ever it is will fix both once I nail it down.

From the GUI

I have gone to NETWORK --> INTERFACES --> Interace 1 --> Service Options ---> and SNMP is enabled.

Then I go to CONFIGURATION --> REPORT SETTINGS --> SNMP --> create a community and configured the CACTI server IP to the device

It is a NetScreen 50 - OS version 5.3.0r6.0

I know, that I am still missing something SO simple.. oh the aggravation!

Thanks for taking time to give hints/links/tips!

**edit**
OK got SNMP talking.. those pesky IP addresses 10.0.2.242 IS NOT the same as 10.0.2.142

So next up is finding this generic NS template.

I am looking in http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t=15067

For anyone that reads this thread there are working templates for Netscreen CPU, Memory, Session, Interface and Tunnel stats here...
