[HOWTO] Install Cacti with Xampp on ubuntu

Post by deadwait »

Hi , i've just put up a how-to for a cacti install with xampp on ubuntu on
http://deadwait.wordpress.com/2007/10/0 ... on-ubuntu/ for anybody who is interested.
I don't think anyone has put this up before and since i dont know much about linux, it took me some time, i guess it could be useful to some of you.

Thanks for posting this! It surely will help Ubuntu users.
But I'd like to integrate it into http://docs.cacti.net as a centrally maintained Cacti documentation. Would this be fine for you?

Of course, i would be very glad if you do so, i actually never could manage to do it with xampp, though aptituding it is very easy ( im still very much a linux newbie ! ), so when i finally did, i thought i would write it down, you forum has been of great help to me, and cacti is really pushing me to learn programming so that i could help out further. i have also posted the same at http://www.howtoforge.com/cacti_xampp_ubuntu
along with the
http://deadwait.wordpress.com/2007/10/0 ... on-ubuntu/
one last thing, since i meant it to be for total newbies, theres absolutely no security setup in that install how-to, even mysql root password is left blank and a 777 mode setup for cacti directory, so if you want me to alter it, please tell me so.
Thank you again.

Allan.

Or if you want to try the Virtual Machine version, this works well on Ubuntu.

these do not work on Ubuntu server, and also you skipped the whole part about creating the cacti mysql user and giving that user full rights tot he cacti db. (you are using root with no password on a mysql server) I see you have it on your site, how-to-forge and here, but you may want to correct this part, and also a few typos (tis instead of this) otherwise very good doc.

Also, no offense, but xammp is for beginners, mainly because it does not offer you the flexibility of the individual apps being installed. , for instance mysql. You can't even issue mysql commands to import the database. When you try to run a mysql command from CLI, it prompts you to install it.

While XAMPP may work for some, I really believe someone using this in a production environment will shy away from this method...

Can anyone give some instructions on installing it on Ubuntu Server, who created the VMWare session? We use MS Virtual Server at work and I am planning on implementing cacti on a virtual Ubuntu server, so the VMware session does not really help but thanks.

Man I am going crazy trying to figure this out. As soon as I do i will contribute tot he how to for all the world to use. Man, if you guys had Ubuntu Server documented, you could increase your footprint by ten-fold.

hi, actually the guide was meant to be for total newbies,i do know about the part where i haven't shown anything about security, but i wanted to put up a guide where everything works the first time, also about the part where xampp is concerned, i set it up more so for my colleagues coz most probably i will not be maintaining the cacti server, they will, and they dont know anything yet about linux, so teaching them a few simple commands does the trick.
but i get your point and i think guides exist for what you want, anyways if i dont see one ill put one up, sorry about the typos too.
and thanx for the comment.

Done... sorry for the wait. Here is a crude mark up. As soon as I have time to make them nicer looking I will.
