You just need to pick the rrd for the interface at one end of each link (each interface has the in and out, so as long as the links are point-to-point, it covers all the traffic). Make sure that when you lay out the map, you start the links from the device with the interface you are going to use the rrd file from - so if you had a link between router1 and router2 directly, and you only had the interface graphs for router2, then you could do

Code: Select all

LINK r2-r1
   NODES router2 router1
   TARGET myrouter2_traffic_in.rrd
so that router2 is the 'viewpoint' for the rrds.

In your situation, where you have a shared ethernet network, what I normally do is create an extra node for the ethernet switch, that you don't normally see, then each of the devices on that switch/vlan connects to the ethernet node, and not each other. This means that the values for each device make more sense - when you see traffic going from app01, SNMP won't tell you how much is going to router2 and router1, only how much is leaving (or entering) app01 via the switch.

You can see this kind of layout here, where a bunch of cabinet switches all uplink into a chassis switch. It fits in with your first diagram better, right?

As long as it really is like your map shows, then can you measure traffic on the switch port that the router ethernet plugs into? As long as it only handles your internet connection, then you can assume that pretty much everything going in and out of the ethernet side of it came from the serial side of it (aside from the odd icmp redirects and so on). So if you have that switch port, you can see the internet traffic, near enough.

You need to set up the Cacti Plugin Architecture, then Weathermap properly. If you go through the installation docs, then you end up with a new Management..Weathermaps (under Graphs and Data Source in the Console), where you can add your map config files so that the Cacti poller with redraw them every time it runs (every five minutes normally).

If you have the Cacti plugin working OK, you never really need the command-line weathermap, (or the Recalc Now button inside Cacti).
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)
