Hi-

Could someone please explain how I would go about setting myself up with graphing and viewing just one particular day.

My objective is to compare January 10, 2004 to January 10, 2003.

In addition, to graphing and viewing one particular day I would like to view what happened two or more years ago.

Another question, is it possible to pick out a certain time frame to see? What if I would like to see whats been happening from the 25th to now.

Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, unless you have an archive of the Jan 2003 data, you can not do what you want.

Cacti uses a round robbin database to store the data. As the data gets older it gets incorporated into the historical data (usually averaged in). Under a default cacti installation, detailed information is only retained for 24 hours before it is overwritten with newer data.

I use two different methods of keeping old data. I do a weekly backup of my rrd files (./cacti/rra), and if I see a graph that looks interesting, I will save a copy of the png file to disk (right clich-->save picture in Mozilla). The second way is probably the easiest method of storing a small amount of historical data since you don't have to screw around with rrdtool in a command line, but it is very cumbersome if you want to periodically save a large number of traces.

Is anyone else tracking two or more years of data thru rrdtool and/or mysql?

I don't want to go thru the hassle saving intresting graphs. I want everything automated and options to select during a certain period during the last few years.

Thanks

This is sad. I'm currently investigating a solution for an isp and cacti seems almost perfect, but because of this maybe not the right solution.

Unfortunately, one of the requirements is the ability to view historical data for about two months at the accuracy level of a single day.

It seems that this is not possible with cacti. Is there any work-around possible? The only extra drawback is the lack of an option to generate a graph with of a certain date.

Cacti is certainly very very userfriendly and in so many ways suitable. But lack of text-based reporting and history-keeping makes me peeking at other solutions, with deep regret.

I know this is a cacti forum and nothing else but I have to ask:

Does anyone else know a good solution as where I can pull historical information- even thou it's not cacti. It seems like this option is a heavy demand and can't imagine that nothing out there has the ability to view historical information in detail reports or even an avg. report that can be pulled via user drop down menu.

You can always get Concord. At $70k per copy, it will do exactly what you want :)

However, there may be a workaround, though I have not tried it yet. The default Cacti daily RRA contains 600 records with a 5 minute polling interval, or in more human terms, 50 hours worth of data. If you increase the size of your RRA, you will be able to see detailed information farther back in time. Assuming you are using a 5 minute polling interval, all you would have to do is to increase the number of records in your archive from 600 to something like 8700 (30 days worth of data).

I believe you would only be able to access this data from the command line, but you would atleast have that data available.

Also realize that doing something like this will dramatically increase the amount of disk space required by Cacti.

There are two major things that I do not know here:
1. I don't know if rrdtool will allow you to specify such a large number of records in an archive.
2. I don't know if it is possible to modify your existing RRD files without losing your current data.

I think I'll play around with this today and find out :)

take a look at cactistoric at http://linkdown.org/ and then search the message forums for cactistoric. You will find a wealth of information.
