Monitoring each user internet bandwidth usage

Post by infinity005 »

We have a cisco 2800 series router connecting our users to the internet and are looking for a way to monitor how much internet bandwidth individual users, or at least IPs are using.

We don't have managed switches.

Does cacti support netflows or something? Any thoughts on other tools that might accomplish this?

There's a plugin for looking at netflows but I haven't used it yet and don't know much about it.

I'd recommend investing in managed switches anyway though. :-) You'll probably eventually need/want this anyway.

Agreed on the managed switch, but it wouldn't tell me internet only bandwidth either. Also, I can't get the higher ups to drop $10k on the core yet :/

IP based usage billing rquires sth like netflow, cflow, flow-tools, ntop or ipfilter based stream analysis. There are some cacti plugins that go this way, but personally, I do not use them
