The smoke represents the overall jitter. The darker the smoke signifies that most of your ping pkts were in that latency range. Not sure if this will help anyone, but we have 4 Internet providers where I work, and I wanted to graph them all to see what our aggregate Internet bw was coming in and out. So attached are some graph templates.

Using a decent box and cactid configured with the right thread count, it should easily be able to handle that. I have 181 hosts with 11702 data sources, producing 6104 rrds....some of my tests are scripts that take about 20 seconds to complete, and my complete run takes about 35 seconds to complete....
