OK, the problem was something to do with my snmp.conf file. That config file is way too complicated. i have stripped it down the very basic and will add to it as the need dictates

the host has snmp installed version is NET-SNMP version: 5.3.2.2 I have applied the patches and tried again, still no difference. i have done snmpwalk and that worked snmpwalk -v 2c -c public 172.16.0.1 the template that i am using is a generic snmp enabled template. does that affect anything?
