When I watch the output of the poller I also see:

PHP Notice: Undefined index: availability_method in /usr/local/cacti-0.8.7/cmd.php on line 231

which shows up as:

update_host_status(HOST_DOWN, $host_id, $hosts, $ping, $item["availability_method"], $print_data_to_
stdout);
