I'm a new user to the WCG/BOINC world, and after reading the forums, what is the attitude toward Grid.org?
For example: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9886 Halfcard - November 17, 2006 "sek, i understand your point. but the scandal at that other place (grid.org) blew away their credibility and i do not want that to happen here." http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8074 we45dfa35gh3476 - July 31, 2006 Grid.org is still sending out massive amounts of HPF1 workunits. There were 42 years of results returned yesterday. It's such an unfortunate waste (but let's not start bashing grid.org - I don't want to open a can of worms). Didactylos - July 31, 2006 Perhaps you could add a further comment: HPF2 is running exclusively on World Community Grid. As far as I know, the project scientists didn't even offer it to grid.org. I have no intention of "opening a can of worms" as one of the quotations alludes toward, but I am very curious. What did grid.org "do" that hurt their credibility and caused them to lose projects like HPF2? Is this a taboo subject? Regards |

Not at all. I've never crunched for grid.org myself, but as I understand it (and I checked their forum archives to be sure) they spent a lot of time sending out work that had been done already (old work units) without telling their members.
As you can imagine, there was some unhappiness when this came to light. Worse, they did it again with the next project. |

Worse, they did it again with the next project. later, their efforts to restore the cancer crunching took (a year??). during this whole time period over many months, numerous requests for information were ignored by the 'big shots'. |

In addition to the above, Grid had serious server problems starting in June of last year, and continuing for a few months off and on. Some of the outages lasted for days. They repaired the server by stripping their beta program test equipment for parts, leaving that system still inoperable to this day. They claimed to have bought and received new hardware but, after more than a year, it has yet to be installed, which makes many people doubt it even exists.
I can go on but think you can get the message |

Any reason a successful grid organization fell apart like that? Poor leadership? Lack of funding?

or C: All of the above.
Grid.org is run by United Devices as a nonprofit operation. Since the troubles began in mid 2005, they seem to have simply stopped caring about it. Since it made no money and was becoming more trouble than it was worth, why bother to put any resources into it? The staff was cut to near nothing at a time that more people were needed, and pleas from long time crunchers for information about the projects and status of hardware and software upgrades fell on deaf ears. If Grid.org is still around in one or two years without very drastic changes, I'll be quite surprised. |

Believe judgment has been passed at the grid.org forum by most of their members who want to see reality. The fact, that the project owners at Oxford hold a new project waiting in the rafters, absent commitment/action to fix the whole server/software issue by UD, tells volumes. The more UD does not meet requirements, the more project developers will be looking elsewhere for a Distributed Computing resource.
----------------------------------------Now we need to be cognoscente of the fact, that if we start passing judgment here, which we should not, someone will see fit to start picking selective words out of here and posting it there, thus propose we just let it rest. WCG is strong and getting stronger. have a peaceful Sunday cheers
