I would suggest that wcg would soon!! add dualcore support for ud agent also.
Since they the throttle feature and no dual-core support wcg is now wasting almost 75% of modern computers resouces. If this is not possible for some reason, at least there should be info in the download page that if person has a dual-core or quad-core machine he should instal boinc. |

Blueroom,
----------------------------------------please visit other posts that carry same message. It can be done today with the present UD agent, with some serious involvement. The obvious path is BOiNC, as many cores used as u like and using Tweakmaster as throttle control. The throttle tool http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7701 for UD obviously allows for it to be increased to 100% of 1 core already....default is 60%, which equates to 30% overall on a dual core. cheers

WCG aren't responsible for developing the UD agent. United Devices do that.
WCG know about the issue, and are examining a few options. I agree that the download choice isn't clear, and I believe WCG are looking at improving that right now. |

Hello and thanks for the answers,
I indeed looked similar suggestions but all the answers where suggestions to switch to boinc (already using it for long time). Anyway I would believe that most of people dont even look the forums or dont try to find any solutions to make they computer work as 100% (and they shouldnt either) but just download what ever is suggested to them in download page. Thats why I suggested this idea either of upgrading ud agent or suggesting boinc in a download page at least when a person has a dual or quad core machines. Since all the new machines will be at least dual-cores I think this is a kind of a big issue. IMO this is also a marketing/pr issue since there are lot of other projects that desperately would need more computing power but there just isnt enough participants, so its not good pr if one project is wasting resources when the resources are still very limited. |

Hi Blueroom,
----------------------------------------We understood your original message and as there are many readers, inserted the alternate solution. Upcoming 5.8 will have a Throttle feature, but that is still needing work, to at least make it work smooth....at the present it is a noticeable on and off. With the BOiNC Simplified Graphical Interface, which will go life also on v 5.8, that appropriate moment is closing in on us to more obviously advertise the alternate. Because BOINC dual Core will presently grab without reluctance all the cores and 100% of idle CPU time, that can shy away new users, particular if running HDC which is very RAM demanding. thanks

Hello blueroom,
Thats why I suggested this idea either of upgrading ud agent or suggesting boinc in a download page at least when a person has a dual or quad core machines. Smirk. That was number 2 on my most recent list of suggestions, which I sent 2 hours before your first post. This is the reason that knreed has spent so many months laboring on the BOINC Simple GUI. As is, BOINC is unpleasantly difficult for most users. WCG is working hard to make BOINC simple for anybody to use. When we get something that does not flummox the unsuspecting, we will be recommending it on the Startup page. This one is a major priority. I expect to see it implemented before we get the new point system deployed. (Just a guess on my part.) Lawrence |

I have to say that the reason I am here is because BOINC did not work for long enough to find out whether or not it worked, so when I found out from the IBM community website about WCG I joined it straight away. No way would I go back to BOINC now - there are too many fingers in that particular pie in my humble opinion!

I do not see the answer that the question generated requiring an answer to the earlier question.
----------------------------------------One can set up BOINC to run either one or many projects.

BOINC is the best option if you care about performance, and won't miss the UD agent's graphics.

BOINC is the best option if you care about performance.... Wait. That's backwards. WCG (and any other project using UD) are the people that that should be concerned with performance...not the user. The user is only sees points. So as long as their machine is performing on an equal playing field, the "loss" is invisible. In other words, they will never know that their multi-core processors are going to waste if that is what everyone else is doing too. Their performance will look "right". The whole point of DC is to use otherwise wasted cycles. So long as UD is using only one of many cores, it is failing at that task. ![]() |
