How many results is enough

How will we know when the Human Proteome project is finished?

What are the goals of the project in terms of the number of results returned? Is results returned the right project metric?

If not what is the right metric to use in order to track project progress?

No, results returned is not the proper metric. It will be finished when we (WCG and grid.org) have completely processed all of the data ISB has set up for this project.

Bottom line is that we can't give you a quick answer such as "We are x% through the data because we've processed y of z workunits."

We don't know how many workunits there will be for two reasons:

  • ISB has what we call data sets. Each data set is split into n workunits. We don't know in advance how many workunits a specific data set will be split into. The number of workunits is determined at the time we create the workunits based on the data itself.
  • We don't pull all the data at one time. What we do is pull some data in and serve it up. As the workunits finish, we pull more data as needed to keep the pipeline full.

As you can see, it's impossible to tell precisely when we'll be finished. We have guesstimates on how long it will take based on how fast we're getting through the data and how much data ISB has to give us, but it's just that, a guesstimate. The more people that sign up and run this, the faster we'll get through the data.
