New GPU aid in computations?

Hello Everybody,

I was just wonderig now that the new Stanford Folding project came out, which consists of using ATI GPUs to aid in the processing, will the community grid make an agent which also exploits ATI/Nvidia GPUs in computations!? It would definitely be a great boost in the amount of computation performed, and might even shorten the time till completion of the various projects.

By the way, what is the current status on FightAids,Help Defeat Cancer, and Human Protemoe Folding projects???

Thanks!

From Lawrence, weeping softly into Kleenex --
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061108-8182.html
Some time ago, NVIDIA hosted a conference call in response to a pair of announcements from ATI and Peakstream in the area of stream processing. The company was coy about what they were up to, and all they'd say is that their project wasn't like what either Peakstream or AMD/ATI are now doing. The Peakstream and AMD/ATI approaches were, in the words of the NVIDIA spokesperson, "like putting lipstick on a pig"—they were taking the existing GPU architecture and bolting on a software layer of abstraction that's intended to hide its graphics-specific nature while exposing its stream processing functionality.

Nvidia is just so brutal! sad

We'll have to see which pig oinks best!

Further to this:
It seems that the types of science open to GPU streaming are quite limited. At least for the present. This is a quote from an unofficial but very knowledgable F@H admin in a team forum. I hope he doesn't mind blushing
Some of the GPU calculations run 30x faster on the GPU than the CPU, but not all calculations. And the GPU client can only fold a limited type of work unit, not all types of work units like th CPU client. So even though a GPU folds at near 30x the speed, the actual value of that science is somewhat less than 30x the CPU points.{snip}

It would seem that we need to have very specific 'pigs'.

Well, i start to think that it will be a few years before we see pigs fly.... and watch that space... Bill is talking to Dr Baker in how to deploy the X360.

....and by coincidence, this pops up on the new AMD-ATI tandem:
AMD: Biggest Microprocessor Evolution Since x86-64

Phil Hester, chief technology officer at Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s second largest maker of central processing units, said at a conference that the integration of graphics processing units (GPUs) into central processing units will allow personal computers to achieve performance of supercomputers eventually.

“Get ready for round two of the "attack of the killer micros. By combining graphics processing unit (GPU) and CPU functions in heterogeneous cores, microprocessors will bring supercomputer performance to the desktop,” said Phil Hester, in a keynote speech at the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) in San Jose, California, reports EETimes web-site.

A Post in answer to someone asking for GPU support in BOiNC at the developer site:

My take on this that the GPU's inherent math inaccuracy would tend to limit it to only a few projects.

I know that Dr. Anderson has approached Microsoft a couple of times about porting Boinc to the XBox. When he first approached them a year ago they were not interested. When last contacted in the last couple of months they said they would think about it.

And Bill is now not talking!

Update: Counter word... the newest GPU cards would not have the math inaccuracy:

The FLOP accuracy of the x1800 and later GPU's from ATI has been increased exponentially. The 'inherent math inaccuracy' you speak of does not exist on these cards.

Contact this guy over at ATI, he'll help you. Someone should send this info to Dr. Anderson also.
