What am I working on?

The picture of the protein is pretty, but I'd feel a lot more involved if I knew what it was. Now I feel like a dogface in a trench, who doesn't know who he's shooting at, or even what the war is about, but is told to just keep shooting.

What is the name and presumed function of each protein we're working with?

Why couldn't this information be sent along when each project is started?

How can I find the info for the project my computer is working on now?

We don't know. That's what this project is designed to help with. Once they know how a specific protein is folded, it helps identify what it is used for.
For more information see the ISB page for this project.

cool Re: What am I working on?

Rick Alther beat me to it, but I will give my standard reply anyway.

You want to start by reading this page at the Institute for Systems Biology at http://www.systemsbiology.org/Default.aspx?pagename=humanproteome
After reading the description of the protein folding view on your screen saver / Agent at the bottom of the page, be sure to click on the Press Release.
Then you might want to read this thread:

Rick: Usually they know where a protein is from, and often what it does, long before they know how it's folded. I would assume that they select proteins for these projects because they have some important function.
It would make working on them much more satisfying if we knew something about the SPECIFIC protein we were assigned. That's the information I'm looking for.

Just something like : "This is a helicase from a drosophila"
