Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I run some of my Linux machines through a switch which is connected to a range extender by ethernet. The range extender then connects wirelessly to the rest of my network. this was necessitated because the machines are located in a shed located away from the house. I don't know if this solution would work for your set up or not.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Ordered a hex chip today to replace the quad. Did some research and seems it can be done. Wasn't sure whether to go with the fastest quad core (3.4ghz) or the hex (3.3ghz) but was 20 bucks difference so jumped on the hex. Winter will be interesting as I will have 2 single hex machines and 1 dual hex machine crunching (provided the upgrade works). 48 threads! biggrin

I have an extender in one of my garages for a security cam I was hoping to tap into but being downstairs, will only see the main router. Guess I could get another extender and hard wire into it. That way I can run linux. Have to get the hex chip working 1st before monkeying with linux.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I needed to replace a drip cap over the new board I replaced behind the gas meter. It was only 2 feet long so I figured I could make my own, which I did. But, I needed the table saw to do it. The table saw plugs into the same circuit as the 2 R610's and I know not to start the saw with those two systems going. So I did an orderly shutdown on them and took them off line. I made all my cuts, unplugged the saw and went to restart the R610's. One took off beautifully, but the other one choked when Linux started. These are the two which have been running off of the USB drives exclusively. The Linux installation on the one had become corrupted and it would only partially boot and then threw a non sync error and a bunch of other gobbledy gook. So I reinstalled Linux on the USB and restarted. No problem. I had over 25 cpu years on that drive so I am a little disappointed that the machine needs to start over, but at least it is working again.
Cheers

I paid $4.99 for the 16 gb drive. I watch the Sunday ads and buy on sale when I need more. I keep a couple spares just in case. I am using Sandisk drives as they seem to hold up pretty good. Long ago I used an Emtec drive and it only lasted about 6 weeks. It is hard to beat the price and they use a lot less electricity than a regular hard drive.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Ever try a SD card in a USB drive? Even a micro SD? Surprised the USB drives last as the read/writes are tough on anything.

No, never tried a an SD card. The USB drives always seem to be cheaper for the same size and I don't need an adapter. However it would be interesting to try.

Got the hex rolling but have to get a better heat sink. Can crunch only 2 wu's for now. Interested in a i7 920 quad core chip?

Thank you, but no thank you. That is a real workhorse of a a chip, but I have been running at least dual cpu servers for some time. I still have a couple of consumer grade PC's I am still using, but I don't have a motherboard for that chip. I might have a lead on a quad cpu server, but don't know if I should get another electric hog. I will have to research it, plus the guy who has it was pretty sketchy on the model. I would have to get more information. I keep the PC's in the house because they are quiet. I would not have the servers in the house as they make way too much noise.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

sounds good. Maybe later i can find a cheap board to through it on. Got a notice on dual 8 core servers for 800 bucks but think i will hold off until i get this one going good. If you know of cheaper dual systems, let me know. Heat sink wont be in until next week so only crunching 3 on it now. Boarder line over heating. Not sure why Dell went with this heat sink. Oh well, the system was free.
