I will shortly try to shutdown and do a reboot to see if that will do anything. Also my cut and paste will not work. Need some advice on what to do, please. |

Reboot is the first thing to try.

Messages: 11/27/2006 5:56:45 PM||Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks It's not because of the CPU benchmarks is it. BOINC does this every few days. It just suspends computation and network activity for a few minutes (mine takes less than 5) and then resumes where it left off. |

For ClarkF1:
Oh no, I've been running bench marks all the time and usually takes less than 10 min's or so. For Lawrencehardin: I had to do a shutdown/reboot on M$ CP home. When the system came up I of course lost all messages but nothing was added anyway since I've been down for a while. I don't know if it will help debugs but on boot up BOINC started the message file as follows: 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Starting BOINC client version 5.4.9 for windows_intelx86 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||libcurl/7.15.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8a zlib/1.2.3 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Processor: 1 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+ 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Memory: 1023.48 MB physical, 2.40 GB virtual 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Disk: 98.30 GB total, 83.94 GB free 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 49595; location: ; project prefs: default 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 2006-07-05 07:45:13) 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||General prefs: using your defaults 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Local control only allowed 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM||Listening on port 31416 10/29/2006 12:22:41 PM|World Community Grid|Deferring task faah0874_bdb558_mx2avv_dry_06_0 10/29/2006 12:22:42 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task faah0874_bdb558_mx2avv_dry_06_0 using faah version 526 It's been running fine since the reboot. But had I been on a couple of days out somewhere I would have been very disappointed to find the system cold. My sys usually runs 24/7. So I've lost a lot of WU's/Results. Paul |

From the Unofficial BOINC Wiki: http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Benchmark_Failure
---------------------------------------- Description/General The Benchmark programs are run after stopping the Science Application programs. 10 seconds is allowed for this. Sometimes BOINC detects a failure to stop the program at the end of this 10 seconds. If this happens BOINC should then restart the projects without running the benchmarks. Unfortunately sometimes the computer is left doing nothing. Detection Project(s) probably shown as running, however the time running and time to completion do not change. The computer may be colder than usual and the CPU usage is low instead of the normal 95%+. The problem starts after you get some messages like this: In your first post, the messages after the benchmark of the 28th are important to know, if the above was in fact the case. No messages were lost, as they have all been copied to several txt files primarily stdoutgui.txt in your BOINC program directory. Have a look for those as we're curious to have the source of this as a future reference for the next victim of this event. It is btw puzzling why an autonomous second benchmark happened a day later as BOINC is programmed to run them exactly every 5x24 hours thx

Since the first benchmark run was stuck and failed to exit, it then started a second run a day later after I noticed no activity and did an update. Just my guess. My stdoutgui.txt file did not have the usual messages just the following: Error: Failed to establish dialup connection: the remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number. This error followed by 1020 columns of spaces. Then: Error: Cannot hang up - no active dialup connection. over 500 lines of this error The program should not check for a dial-up since I'm LAN on ISDN always on. It is curious that this happened after it down loaded the bench mark prog. |

Hello PTabolinsky,
Strange states can build up on your OS between reboots. When I am feeling cautious, I try to reboot every few days. When I am feeling careless, I can let 10-14 days go between reboots. Every once in a while, carelessness hurts, then I am cautious again. Program Files/BOINC/stdoutdae.txt should store your error messages, but they may not be helpful if the problem was caused by a strange interaction with other parts of your OS, which is what I suspect happened. Sorry i copy pasted wrong file name.... as said there are several. The one holding the log entries u normally see passing in the messages window is stdoutdae.txt
----------------------------------------As to your network, there are 2 places in BOINC for connections 1. The second last menu in BOINC has 'Options', take that. In there take the Connections tab, there is a button there that says something like "Remove Standard Connection" (translated from a foreing language interface). Do that. Don't ask me but this window only list the dial up type connections, but not the LAN. Presume your IE browser is set to not dial ever although that should not be relevant! 2. The Middle of the 3 BOINC menu's has 3 options to select how frequent u'd like to connect to the servers.... never, scheduled, always (something like that). Mine is set in the preferences set on the WCG BOINC profile to only contact between 17:00 and 18:00 UTC i.e. i only send and receive when scheduling in that time frame. The endless attempting to connect, probably 1 minute interfalls is annoying as it takes a lot of the crunching power away. Finally, what is this Benchmark prog? BOINC has this integrated. It only donwloads Work Units, Preferences and if there is new science, some program parts. let us know ciao

For Lawrence and Ciao:
For some reason, I can't get the copy and paste to work on the stdoutdae.txt file. Anyway, there is nothing new than what I've sent already that I can detect. The shutdown and cold restart worked OK and the sys seems to be happy again so I think we should just call it an adnormality and move on. I'll try to make better documentation on any future problems. Thanks for the help and encouragements. Paul ITEM CLOSED |
