200K memory utilization with HDC....causing significant performance impact

I am seeing performance degradation running the World community grid client with the HDC application on a Windows Pentium M 1.6Ghz Thinkpad T41 with 1.5GB of RAM (running Windows XP SP2) I am running a fair number of memory intensive applications and the memory utilization from HDC is causing a lot of paging and slowing down other applications. I finally disabled HDC today and am now running the Fight Aids application without any performance impact. I was seeing Memory usage of 200K with the HDC. It seems like this is a lot of memory for a grid application that is supposed to run in the background to take....I am delighted to donate unused cycles, disk, memory but not when the grid app starts to interfere with my machine.

Re: 200K memory utilization with HDC....causing significant performance impact

The minimum requirements for HDC include 750 MB of physical memory.

This is a guideline amount, designed to stop the crunching swamping an average computer. If your memory use is a lot heavier than average, then you should take this into account when deciding whether to run HDC. HDC has a limited supply of work units, so it isn't essential that everybody who can runs the project.

Still, most paging issues are the result of a fragmented harddrive or poorly organised page file. There are a few optimisation techniques you can use to minimise the impact of paging.

I also have the T41, and only 1 GB ram.

It runs WCG 24 hours a day with no problem. Consider other sources, as stated above.

OK, I think I found the problem, I understand the HDC does a fair amount of disk I/O....this was causing a problem with another application. I shifted over to Fight Aids since it does not cause as much disk I/O.
