Hi all,
I've downloaded software yesterday and now I have first configuration problem. In particular I have set my firewall to open ports 80 and 443 for UD.exe, but sometimes other two applications ask for internet connections: - ud_8401401.exe - WCgrid_autodock.exe What are they trying to do? Have I to give them permission? |

Hello Teox80,
WCGrid_AutoDock.exe is the application program for FightAIDS@Home. As far as I know, it never accesses the Internet. The UD program handles all Internet access. However, your firewall probably blocks all inter-process communications between the UD client, the application program and the FAAH screensaver. You need to allow these 3 programs to communicate with each other. I never knew that firewalls could block inter-process communications on the computer itself until I began running distributed-computer programs on a computer with ZoneAlarm. What firewall do you use? Lawrence, Kerio Personal Firewall calls it 'Code Injection Alert'. It asks if u want to give it a one time, permanent or no permission. If permanent, it asks to confirm the creation of an exception rule (password required). Have a dislike for ZA...resource hog.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall.
I'm not sure, but if I don't make an error they try outbound connections, but I'll try to see log better. And about ud_8401401? I've read link posted by [L2G] Slapshot, so have I to permit internet access? |

Hello Teox80,
Yes, allow them Internet access. They are not really accessing the Internet. It is just something related to Internet access that the programs do to communicate with each other. Only UD sends messages across the Internet. But the programs send messages to each other and your firewall is blocking that. For simplicity, your firewall is calling that Internet traffic, but it all stays on your computer. Different fire walls handle this situation differently. Lawrence |

Depending on how your firewall program reports the programs in the dependency tree, it may use different names in the pop-up when it tries to access our servers to return results and get new work. Basically, the UD agent programs only need to make outgoing connections on port 443 to server.worldcommunitygrid.org. The Boinc agent makes outgoing Internet connections on port 443 to www.worldcommunitygrid.org. So you can narrow down the access to these, if you want, in your firewalls. You may block all incoming Internet connections for the agents. However the boinc manager uses a local connection via either port 1043 or port 31416 (the latter with newer versions) to communicate with the boinc process, so you should not block that between the location of the your boinc manager and boinc process.
