confused No work

Hi,

I have installed the client on my laptop. I have actually removed and tried re installing it 4 times now. After each install the client logs in, starts downloading and then stops saying unable to communicate with server. After a day or so it says something about being unable to write to dis check for write protection. The folder is not write protected. Even after 1 month of sitting trying to get a work unit it can't. Can not get Grid to reply to an email. Any body help?

Thanks

Z

confused Re: No work

[Blank Stare] [...empty mind...] Well, the first problem seems to start while trying to download. Could you tell us just how you are connecting?

Is there a router involved?

Does your system meet the System Requirements:
Intel Pentium™ processor or equivalent
2) At least 128 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled) [300MB available]
3) 600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 30 MB available for use
4) The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
5) An Internet connection with minimum 40 kb speed
6) Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP

Have you read the section on Network Settings at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/network_settings.html ?

Tell us about your system – type of laptop, memory, hard disk, OS, firewall, anti-virus software, spyware removal program.

Looking in Member Area – Device Manager how is your Device Profile set?

Right now I do not have a clue, but I always think it is best to have lots of information to be confused about.

Re: No work

Hello Lawerence,

Thank you for the reply smile . Sorry for the lack of useful information in the first post. Let me tell you about my systems.

Home system

P4 3.2 Extreme, 2GB of RAM, 148GB RAID 0, NVIDIA 5700 Ultra video card with 128MB, connects through a Linksys WRT54GS router FW version 3.37 with port forwarding and triggering enabled. This machine runs Symantec Internet Security Pro with rules created for the Grid Client.

Laptop

Dell Inspiron XPS P4 3.4 Extreme, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB Hard Drive, ATI 9600 with 128 MB RAM, have tried connecting through router wired and wireless and dialup. Has McAfee Internet Security. Rules have been created for the Grid Client.

Both profiles set for these machines are set to run 24/7 and use up to 10GB of disk space.

I currently use the old grid client (grid.org) on the home emachine without any issue.

OS on both machines is XP Pro with SP2. Firewall rules created in XP also.

Connection speed to the net is 3000kb down 256kb up.

The client seems to be able to get down a file called ud_xxxxx.gz.sig for a size of 2,150 KB after several attempts, but can never get a second file that appears in the directory as ud_xxxxx.gz. The xxxxx right now is 46113 although it has tried one other file name also.

Hope this infor helps. Open to any (helpful) suggestions.

Thank you again.

cool Re: No work

Yrrrch!! Here I was daydreaming about a second-hand Compaq with all-original 1998 OS installation. Well, so far, all our download problems seem to originate with security trying to protect against Internet attacks. We have identified a problem with McAfee version 8.0 and discuss it in these 2 threads:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=347#3130
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=753#3129

I have no personal experience with this problem because I sneered at all upgrade emails until just before my license was due to expire on 4 Dec 2004. So on 2 Dec I upgraded directly from version 7.0 to 9.0. No problems here. [So far]

Hope this is useful,
Lawrence

Re: No work

Thanks for the heads up on McAfee. I will upgrade to 9.0 today and see if it corrects the problem.

Out fo curiosity, one of those threads mentions turning off "overflow protection" in McAfee as a possible woraround, but I could find no reference to that term in their help file or in tthe configuration screens. Any idea where to find it?

Thanks again for the help and info.

No idea. I just searched the ver 9.0 help files for 'overflow' and then 'buffer' without getting any hits.
