GUI windows and linux

Hello,

I would like to know, why does the GUI boinc Linux is very ugly whereas th e boinc windows si so beautiful ? Does it existe something or a method to reduce the size of the button? to get it in english ? to have the same quality for the GUI linux than the GUI windows ?

My other question is about a process on linux system. When I put $> top I have the boinc process at 85% and an other process at 14% which name is gam_server. What is it and does it important for linux or boinc ? Can I kill him without trouble my operation system and my boinc agent. I say that, because on windows, the boinc process is always at 99%.

Thank you for your help.

Re: GUI windows and linux

RE ..

I have another question. When I launch the $>./run_manager &
the GUI is OK, but if I close the current term the GUI will be closed. I don't understand why, because when a command is launch with the "&" , the program become unlinked of the term.

Thank you

Re: GUI windows and linux

GUI controls are supplied by the operating system. You will have to adjust your display settings if you want to change how it looks.

Language settings are available in BOINC. The setting is in Advanced->Options (then restart BOINC Manager).

The gam_server process is unrelated to BOINC. This doesn't mean it isn't important. I suggest you look it up.

There are various advanced settings relating to terminals, daemons, and running the BOINC core and Manager seperately. Explain the behaviour you want, and we will explain how to get that result (if we can).

Re: GUI windows and linux

OK thank you. But I have other questions.
The first one is about the "&" operator which does not run the application in background ? Because if I run $>./run_manager &
and after I try Ctrl +C it will kill the BOINC GUI, so this should not be.
Does it exist some for running the GUI in a background ?

The second question is about the function "No new tasks". I have two OS, windows and linux and i would like to close my windows because i use it only for wcg. So, if I push "no new tasks" on my GUI windows, i would like that the GUI windows become unenable, but when I will reboot my computer , my GUI linux stay enable and get tasks. Does it the meaning of this button ?

Thank you very much.

Re: GUI windows and linux

In fact I have solved my problem about the "&". I have to push enter after launsh $>./run_manager, and the prompt come back.

So, now i have another problem. I have change the langage of the GUI (Frensh->English) but now I can rechange it (English->Frensh) because the button (combolist) is out of the window and the text "langage" is truncate byt the windows. The problem, is that the text policy is too big (on my GUI). How can I reduce it ?

Last question: When I run the GUI it displays this:
Gdk-WARNING **: Missing charsets in FontSet creation
Gdk-WARNING **: JISX0208.1983-0
Gdk-WARNING **: KSC5601.1987-0
Gdk-WARNING **: GB2312.1980-0
Gdk-WARNING **: JISX0201.1976-0
22:00:00: Error: Cannot set locale to 'en_GB'.

but the GUI is ok and tasks are running, but I would like to disable these warnings. Do you know what is the problem about ?

Thank you for all

Re: GUI windows and linux

If I recall correctly, it simply means you don't have the fonts needed to support all the languages supported by BOINC.

I have no idea what you mean about "No new tasks". The reason for the option is to allow you to stop getting work for a project, for example if you are considering detaching from the project or if you want to take a break from it. This allows you to complete the work you have already downloaded without aborting it prematurely.

How to change the font size will depend on your Linux distro and window manager. I suggest you have a look under "settings".

Re: GUI windows and linux

I recently had to reinstall SuSE 10.1 after a drive failure. I can no longer use the boinc manager because the fonts are being replaced by just boxes. I assume this means I do not yet have the proper fonts installed.

I have installed a bunch of TT fonts but still have the problem. Does anyone know what font is used in the boinc gui? If there was a way to change it to an installed font, I'd try that too.

Re: GUI windows and linux

BOINC Manager uses wxWidgets, and as far as I know, it will use the default font specified by the window manager. If you are having trouble, then you could try a different shell, I suppose.

Are you set the the right locale? It is possible you are trying to use a language that isn't supported by your installed fonts or default window font.

I'm sorry, I'm pretty much guessing here. Your first port of call is the control panel for your window manager.

I was afraid of this answer. I am now using the Beryl window manager. I seem to remember that the gui worked ok on the previous version of Beryl, called compiz.

My only option is to load up knoppix and try to run it from there.

Re: GUI windows and linux

As an experiment, I ran the gui before I loaded the beryl window manager. The result was the same: no text, just little black boxes where the letters should be.
