BOINC Newbie prob...

Hi. I've used the UD Agent for years, but am new to the BOINC client.

I have it running on a MacOS X system (PPC). It's been up and running for two days now, but it doesn't appear to be returning any results. It's certainly crunching; just no results.

Any ideas for someone new to this client? THanks.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

hi,

assuming you've created a BOINC account at WCG, the running of BOINC still requires the Project Attach step in BOINC to www.worldcommunitygrid.org before crunching starts...... think u have...... then have u selected to run FAAH+HDC or just HDC......look under the messages tab if their is anything suspicious. Select anything unusual and a few lines before and after that, hit the copy button on left and post again here with the messages.

ciao

PS just notice searching for the installation instructions that the 'already have BOINC' link actually carries one to the software download page....oooink

Here a help page for BOINC: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=bnc

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

Thanks for the reply. I did setup worldcommunitygrid as a project and have attached it. It shows a task crunching away, but never seems to complete it and send it off. At least my statistics are not showing anything coming off that box.

I have FAAH as the only project to work on in my device profile. Is that the genesis of the problem?

I see a log list. Is it possible create a text file of this and, if so, would it be helpful if I posted it?

Thanks.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

If the message screen shows it has completed task and a a line that states something like 'reporting 1 task', its very probable that the work u returned is sitting in Pending Validation......go to the Result Status page and click on the Work unit names which shows the details. For each WU, 3 copies must be crunched before its validated. After that the points are credited. Boinc points x 7 equals WCG points.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

Hello ZABA77,
If you go to 'My Grid' - 'Device Manager' - 'Results Status' you should see what the server thinks your computer is doing. BOINC has much more information available than the UD client shows.

confused Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

Thanks again guys. I am still having trouble. The following is my log file. It looks to me the problem is that it keeps restarting, but I don't know why. Sorry to put the log file in the body of the message; it doesn't appear this forum allows file attachments.

Any help would be great. Thank you.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

It looks as if you have several workunits. You should see some waiting in the task tab and one running.
Wed Sep 27 10:06:58 2006||Using earliest-deadline-first scheduling because computer is overcommitted.
The default in the profile is only 1/10 of a day. It can be set to a larger number if you want more, but don't use more than a few days.

Do not worry too much about this. It shows up now and then but may only be a bug. It should go away. I see one now and then.

I wonder whether the memory is a bit constrained.

There's no virtual memory indicated either. Hmmm.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

This is an older iMac. I picked it up to get familiar w/ the OS as almost all of my experience is w/ Windows & Unix.

Any suggestions on things I could check and/or change on this unit? When I'm not using it, I let it crunch away on FAAH.

Re: BOINC Newbie prob...

ZABA77,

Looking at the log and the benchmark value of just 209/489, your computer is going to take a few days of uninterrupted crunching on a FAAH which on my 1300/2600 takes about 8 CPU hours.

U should see a steady percent progress for FAAH under the work-tab in steps of 0.002 or 0.003% every so many seconds....... if that number skips back, something is not right. That i have not seen unless interrupted.

As suggested by Retsof, u must have Virtual Memory / Swap File memory active so that the process can temporarily write process sections to disk.

ciao

PS dont know how Mac versus Windows benchmarks compare, but to indicate, my machine is 2.53ghz.

Thanks for the reply. Is this something I set in MacOS and/or BOINC? If so, how?

Thanks again. Forgive me, I'm pretty new at MacOS. The last time I used a Mac in any meaningful capacity was back in the System 7 days. And that was only for a little typesetting. wink
