Howdy yall,
I recently began running BOINC on an Apple Macbook, 2ghz with 1.25gb RAM. I check system monitor and it has been spending a good amount of time at 100% CPU work, on the order of 2-3 hours at time. Now, this is my first laptop of any kind, so I'm a bit worried about cooling. Should I be concerned about running my laptop this hard for several hours a day? Do Macbooks have any known issues with CPU cooling? As safety precaution, I used two pads of sticki-notes to lift the laptop about an inch off my desk with the hope that it would allow air to pass underneath the hardware. I know air conducts heat better than my particleboard desk, and at the least, it makes it more comfortable to type. I also leave it on "Battery Performance Mode" which restricts the system to 90% output. If this isn't enough, what should I do? Can I under-clock just BOINC without slowing down the rest of my system when I need it? Thanks, Ryan |

Hello ryanmcc10,
BOINC is constantly changing. The current recommended version of BOINC always runs at maximum speed, but the development version includes a throttle. Of course, to use this throttle the application has to be modified. Uhh. . . at least, that is what I think. I have not heard of any problems with a clean Macbook that is not clogged with dust, so I suspect that you are all right. Lawrence |

I run BOINC on my 1.4GHz HP laptop. Every few months I have to open it up and clean out any dust that has collected on the fans and heatsinks. The bottom does get fairly warm after a couple hours of crunching, but nothing seems to be complaining. Propping it up a bit for more airflow does help.

----------------------------------------the throttled mentioned by Lawrence sits in the 5.6.x BOINC versions.....very few bugs are left and been happily running is for over a month. As sites like WCG have not yet incorporated the new features, and also because lots of tweakers like to control their BOINC settings from a locally, rather than updating one or the other setting on a server, there is the global_prefs_overrride.xml file. This override file does not exist by default but has been available for longer. It ad interim allows the employment of the new features.
