The Fastest Link

Reading some of the older stuff here on the forum (BellArc tip of Lawrence Age for instance) and following links across the web to discover how to tweak all the settings in WinXP SP2 f.k.a. WOZE (Worst Operating Zystem Ever) managed to get the security rating per said BellArc from 3.3 to 7.3 without any impairment from previous user experience......WOZe has a lot more features to make the house much safer....scary to admit.

As a side effect of tweaking around, one of the recommendations was to change the MTU to 576....... did that and obviously, no change in net performance to tell off......but then 3 days ago, decided to have a look over the reconfigured WIFI router (no computer of mine is directly linked to the Router), where there is also a default MTU of 1400 and a MRU of 1492 and using the required PPPoE protocol. Following logic, changed the bridge filtering also to PPPoE discovery and MTU to 576 against the ISP (Alice/Italy Telecom) recommended standard and low and behold.....acute net performance improvement......formerly stuttering streaming TV from across the US and Europe now perform without a single frame missed and the sound improved markedly, whilst now sitting here listing to the personalised Pandora radio from Seattle.

Now the 65000 USD (albeit virtual) quiz question.....which of these is the key element that made the net race like it does now.......megabyte files from WCG come thru in seconds....the WCG web has not stuttered since......whazup.

PS fastest link......there's that testing site http://www.speedtest.net/ (thx halfcard) that allows one to see how fast from central Italy to:

Amsterdam 19.7mb in, 0.5mb out
Wormerveer 4.4mb in, 0.4mb out (a little village near A'dam)
Moscow 2.9mb up, 0.3mb out
Fort Worth 2.5mb in, 0.3mb out
London 2.2mb in, 0.33mb out
Seattle 1.1mb in, 0.37mb out
Auckland 0.7 in, 0.3mb out (literally the exact opposite point on the planet)
Yokohama 0.6mb in, 0.1mb out.
Sydney 0.2mb in, 0.3mb out (weird after several repeats)

The ISP has ltd my upload to 480kb for obvious reasons.

Re: The Fastest Link

Hi Sek

Just a word of caution

I once used a XP tune up wizardy thing on my PC which was a gateway to the net for the whole house at the time which changed the MTU size for "Optimum Performance" then all of a sudden my Daughters PC can connect to Google and bbc.co.uk but not other sites !!!!

As there was a time interval between the XP Tune Up and the website issue I figured spyware or some such. Ran everything still the odd behaviour. In teh end I rebuilt my Daughters PC from Scratch aarrrgghh still the odd behaviour.

Then in one of those fleeting moments of inspiration you get when you are least expecting it. MTU size I wonder if that has anything to do with it d oh

Changing it back normal service resumed.

I share this with you as I wouldn't wish anyone to go through the same experience.

Some web servers can obviously segment up their packets more easily than others so just beware or you might end up in that black hole..

The throughput issue is v complicated with TCP's window size, bandwidth available on youur ADSL ATM's cell boundaries and round trip delay all coming into the equation. A Buddy of mine did some studies and around 1230Bytes is the optimum for a 2Meg down 256K up broadband service.

But honestly it's best left well alone wink

Dave

Re: The Fastest Link

Thx Dave......thanks for the cautionary.

the MTU smallest reduces fragmentation as i read it, but more important, it supposedly reduces 'backpacking' of ill add-ons to the minimum....got tripple software fencing and the router, plus now experimenting with GreenBorder.....kind of a VM for internet browsers....just was released for Firefox.

Generally am extremely vigilant for intruders......even caught out my bank sniffing....they never answered after their initial 'we will investigate' message.

Meantime been watching Ryder Cup over web....looks like the usual....'teamplaying' America is down in the fourballs/foresomes.

BTW What's your safest fastest link.....The City rather slow compared to the rest of the developed world ;>)

ciao

oh, each time i start tweaking i take a restore point :-)

Re: The Fastest Link

tongue Yep us Brits are behind again

2 Meg down 256K up is still the norm however ADSL Max is generally available from BT which offers up to 8Mb Down 832K up. Which will be my next step but they are having teething issues. Another posibility is LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) through companies like Easynet (ISP behind Sky's offering) Providing 8 Meg down 768K up.

Only one company doing ADSL 2+ which is Be which doesn't have a great footprint and I think they might have been bought by another mobile company.

An outbreak of Free Broadband services has occured in the UK tied up with other services such as TalkTalk bundled with your telephone service and Sky and Orange are also in the same game.

Not sure how this will all fall out over here but my v reliable 2M with fixed IP address for over £38 a month is not looking like value for money anymore crying .

Re: The Fastest Link

take 2 i had a word with the tech dept of a large company n they said if you keep your large modem n migrate ,the new company has no way of checking what your bandwith is

aslo theres a loada tech stuff on the net that can get your server to serve as long as youve dialled yoursel

its pretty easy n nobody seems to get caught n i have no idea if theve put a law in scince

seriously though ip servers need a minimum of 30 people the rest is profit

i checked out how mutch to start up a server myself n found the figures rougly 30 people at 15 amont is £1500"a month
3000 people n you doing over £10gs a week

im good at this sorta stuff but it runs a lot easier with a partner

demt the art of no reply

Re: The Fastest Link

David, this has always been available with cable. The question is, are you prepared to pay for it?

George, I believe you have been misled. Sorry.

Re: The Fastest Link

Dave,

hmmm if Ital Telecom can get me 20mb + land line phone plus unlimited international calling thru Europe and North America for 61 Euro (40 pounds including 20% VAT), then u should be able to do better....there's now triple and quad play including cell and sat. Concept of cable TV does not exist in Italy.

Don't know if fixed versus dynamic IP makes any difference in the pricing structures....u run your website.

ciao

.... Ryder Cup .......10-6 sofar for Europe dancing
