I am from Iran and I have participated in WCG projects for more than 6 months via BOINC. I was just wondering why the country list does not include IRAN. This is somehow disappointing.

It's a stupid legal technicallity.
There are a few countries that the US can't export software to. However, there's no way of blocking downloads on a per country basis (Internet freedom! Yay!) so WCG compromise by just pretending you don't exist. Hopefully eventually WCG will set up as a charity based Switzerland or somewhere, and these meaningless US annoyances will be a thing of the past. |

Hello Seyed Reza Jafarzadeh,
It's a stupid legal technicality. The WCG is based in the USA. US law defines ciphers as munitions (guns). Exporting a cipher to a country on the list maintained by the US Department of Commerce is defined as gun-running (merchants of death!). The WCG uses encrypted, compressed data streams. Therefore, countries on the US Department of Commerce list are omitted from the list of countries. It is a legal fig leaf (a legal fiction). But then, Switzerland maintains such restrictive gun export laws that they cannot sell guns to a country that needs them. In general, gun control laws seem hypocritical when looked at objectively. The peculiar thing here is that US law defines ciphers as munitions, so all the standard gun control hypocrisy applies to them as well. Lawrence |

Amongst, ILSA (Iran / Libyan Sanction Act) is in whole or part still in effect. Whether WCG/IBM want to request an exception on humanitarian grounds has been discussed before on this forum. Just checked that Iraq was added to the list of selectable countries......Libya still is not, as are Sudan, North Korea, Cuba and Syria.
----------------------------------------Dealing with that stuff, just read a publication update sept.18, 06, that Libya was released from that ILSA sanction and that law was to expire Aug.05,2006. That other act remains undiminished on the countries mentioned in previous paragraph.

I just joind the project and I couldn't help feeling a little bit unwelcome because of this.
I'm an Iranian leaving in the US and I'd like to choose Iran in my profile as my nationality. This doesn't have to do anything with where I live or where this software is exported to. Like most other people, I take pride in my nationality and I don't hide it. As mentioned earlier on this thread there's no physical ban (like an IP restriction) for downloading the software (or may be there is; I don't know) nevertheless exporting/downloading a software product is irrelevent to choosing a country in one's profile. I don't want to make a big deal out of this at all but while many times we find ourselves in the middle of a boring and pointless political fight between governments, I wish we could proactively avoid such things at least in places like WCG which target humanity as a whole. ![]() |

It is a little difficult to find out how IRAN feels about us since I don't read Farsi.
----------------------------------------Here is an opinion from the Index of Economic Freedom. http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/country.cfm?id=iran I have an old postage stamp album that has no places for stamps from North Korea, People's Republic of China and Cuba. Iran was still in there since the government transition had not yet happened. Unfortunately, the citizens get jerked around in these government squabbles. There are many country to country restrictions. Here, Saudi Ariabia prohibits imports of chickens from Iran due to bird flu. This report is somewhat funny to read, since it is in Chinese English, so I will post it. Saudi Arabia completely forbids the poultry to import Source: China's agricultural network Author: ¡¡Published Date: 2005-11-21 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Exist danger and neighbouring country that bird flu invade take place epidemic situation case of bird flu already, as prevent prevention action that bird flu break out at home, Saudi Arabian government issue decree determine to completely forbid the poultry to import. Saudi Arabia doses of customs and entry port take strict measure already, entry to forbid poultry. Saudi Arabia is following the development trends of the bird flu epidemic situation of the world closely, watching the suspected case of possible bird flu attentively. Have not found poultry's death case and epidemic situation report of bird flu within the territory of Saudi Arabia yet at present. Kuwait in neighbouring country find first bring fatal H5N1 birds bird , from some falcon that Asian countries brought into only. The related departments of Saudi Arabian government have already further strengthened the measure, has strengthened it to distributing 500 poultry's supervision efforts of the feed lot in all parts of the country. On October 25, Saudi Arabia has already forbidden importing the living bird's birds from Romania , Turkey and Iran, the case with birds' bird's death of H5N1 virus has taken place in these countries. I think if you set up a BOINC profile up at BAM, you will be able to get your statistic to fly under any flag you like.

The United States is closing its consulate in Eritrea. Add another country to this list.

As a US citizen, I completely agree that politics should be removed from humanitarian functions. We are merely citizens from different countries who believe, together, we can volunteer our computing time to solve the problems of the world. Too bad the Governments of the world cannot use this type of system to come up with solutions to political disagreements!
