2 Hours and 40 minutes!

The time it takes to go with the aid of a 2Meg Broadband Link from a blank but formated hard drive to running XP with MS Office 2003

That's without the aid of Ghost and it's ilk

Install XP
Install DirectX9
Install Mobo Drivers
Install Graphic Driver
Install XP SP2
Install 32Mb of "Priority" updates
Install Office
Install 105Mb of "Priority" updates

still sans Anti Virus and Spyware catcher but now after my 137Mb of Internet downloads it's safe to go out onto the Internet wink .

Doesn't bear thinking about what that would be like over dialup d oh

Lost count on how many reboots

We must be due a SP3 by now. Wasn't there supposed to be a new extremely secure OS to put on your Windows Box around about now raised eyebrow

Re: 2 Hours and 40 minutes!

If it helps you could try using Autostreamer to slipstream SP2 into XP, thus not having to install it seperatly. smile

Re: 2 Hours and 40 minutes!

Hi

Yes I agree on Autostreamer it's brilliant!

I also saw some time ago, that SP3 won't be released until after that super secure all bells and whistles version of Windoze is released some time soon. (Yes Viginia, there is a Santa Clause, Easter Bunny and Fairies at the bottom of the garden).

One thing we can all be sure of, is that it will be released before it is ready. biggrin

Might try using the spare time to learn linux.

Cheers ozylynx smile

Re: 2 Hours and 40 minutes!

Don't know what to expect of a SP3 for Win-d-ohZ-XP....Belarc Advisor at the moment lists 60 SP3 Patches to my SP2 OS.....there are even some that pile all the patches together and call in pre-SP3........by that time i do hope to have migrated to Linux though, whatever flavour the choice will be.

ciao.

Re: 2 Hours and 40 minutes!

Dave,

Just for comparison... I just finished installing Linux Fedora Core 5 with all updates and Open Office and virus protection. Time required was 3 hrs 15 min, half hour more than your Windows install but very similar in functionality. Computer is a tortoise (800 MHz, 512 MB RAM) and the download speed from Fedora's update site is extremely slow. The system install itself (apart from downloads) took 45 minutes. Only 1 reboot required for the whole install including updates.

Windows, Linux, Mac... they all suck but Linux is free and it works better than Windoze. Far less wierd stuff happens here now that 6 of 7 boxes are off Windoze and on Linux.

I've heard lots of good stuff about Mac but never owned or used one. Hope it works well for you. I don't know any Mac users who cuss Mac like Windoze users cuss Windoze.

Re: 2 Hours and 40 minutes!

Dagorath try Ubuntu you will be up and running with Open Office in what feels like just 30 mins. No offense to the linux crowd but Ubuntu is the only Linux distribution where I as a fully asimilated Windows user could find my way around

That really is praise.. honest

Only a live SATA controller on the mobo had it scuppered. Once disabled piece of cake.
