Correct way to update BOINC client?

I have been using BOINC 5.4.9 for quite a while, until I noticed that 5.4.11 was released. I downloaded the installer and just ran the installer. Everything went through fine, but when BOINC Manager came back up I had to reattach the project. Additionally, it d/led new WUs (at least I'm pretty sure it did) and I'm assuming it aborted the old ones. Is this going to occur everytime I upgrade the BOINC client? I have quite a few computers to go through as well... Additionally, I hope this does not create a new device in my profile, I have enough duplicates to manage already!

Is this the typical way to upgrade / update the BOINC client? Seems inefficient to have to re-register everytime and lose 2 WUs (dual core proc) that you were working on. Any insights?

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

The way i read the release notes on BOINC 5.4.11 for Windows was, that it was created to work around a networking issue that McAfee created by doing someting non-standard......thus, good chance u dont need that version.

As to loosing your workbuffer, upgraded a number of times on the single instance, but never lost a single WU. Only thing it does is running a new benchmark and get on with it.

ciao

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

Hi Chowbow,
I just installed the update for windows and I didn't lose any work units. Everything started back up where it left off.
I didn't lose any work units.

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

The only cause for this happening is if you install BOINC to a different location. That would lose all your current work and force you to reattach.

Normally, BOINC will retain all your current work and continue seamlessly.

A-ha! You hit the nail on the head Didactylos. It installed in a different location... I'll remember that for next time.

G'day Chowbow

You shouldn't have lost your original wu's they should still be in the original location.

If this is the case and you want to keep them you can but you will have to lose the new wus. The easiest way to do this is uninstall 5.4.11 from the new location and reinstall it in the old location. If you really want to move it to the new location set all your projects to no new work, wait until you have crunched and reported all your old units, then uninstall and reinstall to your new preferred location. wink

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

Thanks for the tip Trog Dog... I've gone through a number of WUs already in this new install location. I'll just leave it be for now...

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

I'd not be surprised if u can start BOINC up from the old location in Explorer. If, then set the option to not fetch new work and run it down....else, at least hit the break-off button on each of them in the queue so WCG can send fresh copies out, rather than generating a 'No reply' delay.

BTW did the install in a new location create a new device for u in the WCG listing?

Re: Correct way to update BOINC client?

Sekerob,

Good idea, I'll go and do that...

And yes, it created a new device in my profile, FYI.
