grid.org vs worldcommunitygrid.org

What is the difference? The agent is very similar although this one seems a little more up-to-date. Are they part of the same system?

Re: grid.org vs worldcommunitygrid.org

They are not at all the same. Both agents are supplied by United Devices (UD) - the people behind grid.org. But WCG also support the BOINC agent, and have different projects running on the grid.

If you ask people who migrated from grid.org to here, they will tell you horror stories about grid.org wasting valuable processing time recrunching old work, merely because they didn't have anything new to do. That isn't an issue here - work is never wasted, and World Community Grid are always looking for new projects and have work queued up that will keep us busy for years.

The above is true. They wasted 3 months of my 10+ computers for apparently no reason other than what Didactylos mentioned. That is why I found it necessary to migrate elsewhere. The WCG seemed the best of all the projects because they work on the right things from my viewpoint and all the results are public for anyone on the planet to use. BTW, I run the BOINC agent exclusively.

Kind Regards and Welcome to the WCG Forums.

And they are still doing it! They recycled old Human Proteome Folding work units for two months after WCG sent out the last one and archived the project.

They seemed to think they were doing everyone a favour instead of merely wasting loads of energy and time.

Points are a way of keeping score. They are not an end in themselves.

Re: grid.org vs WorldCommunityGrid.org

I've recently migrated in the other direction, moving my slower machines from WCG to Grid.org because there is no suitable work for them here any more.

I must say I find the whole Grid.org system less polished than WCG. The forums in particular seem less well supported, particularly bearing in mind the much larger membership. I think the help that is generously given to members here at WCG from other members and especially from staff and Community Advisors is what makes WCG so special.

If another WCG project comes along that can use my 18 slowest machines they will be transferred back the same day! Keep up the good work.

David.

Re: grid.org vs WorldCommunityGrid.org

DavidHobbs...why back to WCG......could u find BOINC on the dark side :<).

Kind of wondering about the work here and the potential of it running low....FAAH, cant suss it out with the contradictory info of Larry Fine (mid August he wrote there was a few more weeks left) and the HDC being finite (and of ltd supply).....HPF2 no squeak...thus been preparing for some alternate options......WCG is prime, but the weight switch can be flicked in seconds on BOINC......anyway, whatever progress PC's and computing power, still flustered about the ease with which low end member machines were discarded **, particular for those just on UD agent, who had little alternative but to go the steep BOINC learning curve, or do what u done just now. WCG is not giving away anything much.....on low end upcoming project, the last promises flying very hard in the face!

** Upping from 1 to 1.5gb ram bought for myself to work and not for BOINC crunch, was substantially quickly taken over by, guess what?.......talking about providing spare cycles then translating into sheer science ram greed.

PS, the electricity cost of running 18 machines in Italy would fund a new machine, that has the power of 10 each......if they are real workplace stations, then hey, u made the right decision (personal opinion, not community adviSe (is that with S or C ;>)

ciao

Re: grid.org vs worldcommunitygrid.org

I actually had the same question. I just moved over from grid.org to WCG because I thought that this was the updated version (client looks newer anyway). Now I notice that one thing that is missing is for this client to run using all my idle time.

Now I just have the wcg_HDC_TMA.exe process running about 60% of my CPU and my idle process taking up about 40%. Am I just missing an option someplace or is this functionality gone from this client? It seems that this client is slowing my other apps way more than my old grid.org client was. Thanks.

Re: grid.org vs worldcommunitygrid.org

Have a look for the little trottle tool (it's mentioned in the Graphics screen of the UD Agent). The little slider allows to bring it all the way up to 100% again. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683
