Hi Crunchers.
I have recently added an embarassingly small computer to my little farm. It barely complies with the minimum requirements for the FAAH and Protein folding projects but falls short of the Fight Cancer@Home Req's. It wll be a full time dedicated machine and returns a FAAH project in around 30+ hours. i.e. It won't be the last pony home most of the time. I created a profile for it which I named "Babies" for obvious reasons, also it will be joined soon by a couple of other similar boxen. My problem is that in the "Device Manager" the new profile does not appear in the drop down menu for that device! Thus there is no way to select that profile. Please help. Cheers Ozylynx ![]() |

Hi ozylynx....u use BOINC, but say u created a profile called babies....not possible....only 4 profile names are possible for BOINC.....Default, school, work, home.......thus more than likely u created a UD agent profile.....they are not compatible.

That's the story, Sekerob, thanks.
Do I need to do anything to prevent the wrong type of Work Unit being sent to that machine or is the BOINC smart enough to work out that I haven't enough ram all on its own? Also, does anybody know if there is a RPM installer for BOINC anywhere? I'm trying to find a Linux distro that fits me, not easy due to large gobs of the pretty stupids and with all the other hassles of trying to learn a new OS, I haven't been able to get a satisfactory install of BOINC, just to complicate things. Any help with installation process for Linux would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Ozylynx ![]() |

OzyLynx,
----------------------------------------if u've chosen e.g. FAAH (Aids) and HDC (Cancer) and any particular machine has 512mb or less, it will only pick up FAAH. Any 750mb RAM machine will pick up both. BUT, if u select HDC only and pick the option '"If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project (this option only applies to BOINC agents)." in the profile in addition, your 750mb machine will only get HDC and any 512mb machine will get only FAAH. Mind u, playing with the 4 profiles earlier mentioned, it is possible to have each PC run 1 type each. The various tricks have been discussed in different posts. Problably, a little matrix could help many to picture the selections and the effects On the Linux distro's, i've seen posts where people have written instructions on how to remote install and even how to generate these ('msi' i think its called in ms lingo). I'm sure a Vailliant will stand up to the plate and explain, or u can have a 'clusty' search on issue. ciao

ozylynx,
It's fairly easy to get BOINC running under any version of Linux but if you're looking for a distro that installs it automatically for you then I think maybe Debian has (or did have) BOINC. I'm a Linux newbie too and have never tried Debian but I recall reading somewhere that Debian has/had BOINC. I have BOINC running under Fedora Core 5, very stable, no problems. If you have a Linux installed and running, even if not Fedora, then I am confident I could help you get BOINC going on it. Be aware that BOINC on Linux will claim only half the credits BOINC on Windows claims. If you're still interested then start a thread called something like Installing and Running BOINC on Linux in the BOINC support forum. I'll join you there. There are some Linux experts hanging around here. If we amuse them long enough with our noobiness they might eventually take pity and tell us how the experts do it. |

Thanks Sekerob and Dagorath.
Told you I was pretty dumb at times I haven't even seen how to "attach" to different projects in BOINC and have "attached" to the WCG project as a whole. Given the explaination however I don't see this as a problem, time will tell.I also have seen the posts refered to, in regard to remote install and MSI but my head spins just reading them. The thread refered to is way, WAY too technical for me to begin to grasp. Heck I'm still having problems getting my Windows XP network running properly. Dagorath. The Fedora distro is the one that I have installed atm. I did get the BOINC installed in a fashion but I was trying to get it to run as a service and wound up with it only running under 'root' and denying me any form of access to it as 'user'. Not what I wanted I'm affraid. Also Fedora identifies my sound card but doesn't use it, which although not necessary on the machine I'm trying it on, doesn't help my vision of an almost complete transition to Linux at the earliest possible opportunity. Having said that, Fedora looks the best of what I've tried so far. I am about to try Lindows on that machine (Debian) but I suspect I will be reinstalling Fedora in the near future... I will start the new thread when I've settled on something that I feel is worth sticking to. Cheers ozylynx. ![]() |
