we might be useful grid computing contributors.. but who does gain ?

Dear friends over the internet,
I think the grid computing system is a fantastic opportunity to rethink this world for better conditions.. but: which are fundamental research fields ? as showed in the BOINC web page

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php

(I HAVE A PANIC FEAR OF WHAT CONSEQUENCES COULD BE)

1 . maths research: remember that many contemporary math fields deal with cryptography and cryptoanalysis techniques, that is the BIGGEST BUSINESS in all the possible applications you may think about control of data and commercial transactions AND military applications...

2. medicine / chemistry research: who does get the commercial patents for what scientists are going to discover with these grid computings systems ? Pharmacology is the Golden Empire for business giant corporations

3. weather research: mathematical models to predict weather conditions: not only to avoid disasters around the globe, but this is a core matter for predicting commercial values of goods, like agriculture production forecasts to edit Stock Exchange quotations on all the markets around the planet: another BIG BIG business for Economy Kings

4. Nanotechnology: this is the Holy Grail of technology, this is the BIG business that Industrial Corporations are financing as the new technology revolution according to Industrial products of all kinds..

finally: I am proud to give a less than minimum contribution to research with grid computing networks and I do hope to let the Doctors and Scientist get better conditions for mankind..

BUT: AM I GIVING MY FREE HELP TO THOSE WHO WILL EARN TONS OF MONEY ON WAR CONTROL SYSTEMS ? ON SELLING NEW MEDICINES ? ON PREDICTING AGRICULTURE PRODUCTIONS ? ON SELLING NEW MATERIALS TO THE NEXT GENERATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY SLAVES ?

I hope some of you could share different opinions about this and let me see the whole process with less worry. Thank you

Fabiano - Italia - Europe
p.s.
the only project currently running on my Mac is SETI Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence.. I hope aliens could be smarter and wiser than we are.

Fabiano, Non sia impaurito. Ottengo tutti i soldi. Vivo vicino a Mosc-ufo. Gli stranieri sono arrivato. Bevono il Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Marramiero wink

But seriously, the results are freely available to the scientific world. Could not care less if they make money with it, sort of, long as the product becomes available to the world population unrestricted.

ciao

Fabiano,
You make a valid point with all of your statements. However, like a good many other things in life it is how we as the human race make use of the knowledge we acquire. It is the proverbial two edged sword. This information (knowledge) can be used for both great good and great evil. Those who are altruistic will use it for the good and betterment of all, but there will always be some malevalent souls who twist and pervert items or knowledge to their own ends.
For instance, a bulldozer is a marvelous piece of construction equipment, saving many back breaking hours of labor to help construct many types of structures. However, with a rogue driver, it could do great destructive damage.
Let us hope that what we are doing here puts more assets on the helping side of the ledger rather than the hurtful side.

Ciao

Joe

Re: we might be useful grid computing contributors.. but who does gain ?

Hi Fabiano Spiga

All of the research to date on the World Community Grid has so far been medical in nature. To find out what we are doing just take the time to read the website - up a bit and to the left is a button marked research. That's what we are doing. We are not responsible for any of the ethics of any other distributed Grid Project.

All of the research carried out here is public domain and yes if the data we provide gives a scientist at Pfizer or Smithkline or whoever the capability to produce a treatment or cure for Cancer or HIV or any other disease that afflicts Mankind so be it if they make a profit as a result. Turning our info into useful treatment/cure takes a lot of investment in load of complex machines and is a risky business to be involved in, so we should just be glad they are there. I'm sure the level of profit they could make will be tempered by public opinion anyway cf the backlash these companies have at the moment over Africa for instance.

If you are worried about being part of a project that might produce fat profits for a company that produces a Cancer treatment then I suggest you keep on looking for ET. But the next time you see a small child white as a sheet with no hair and a huge scar going through Chemo please give us some thought.

Regards
Dave

Re: we might be useful grid computing contributors.. but who does gain ?

Pharmaceutical companys make big money. They can also lose big money. When they make big money it is because they spent a lot on research, made an important discovery, kept their discovery secret and/or patented their drug. The patent reduces the competition and drives prices up.

The crunching we do here at WCG helps research scientists at universities and other non-profit research facilities. Their discoveries will not be kept secret. If their discoveries benefit pharmaceutical companies then it will benefit all of them. That will increase competition and will drive prices down.

I wish my government would buy a few supercomputers and give them to the universities to help their research. Instead we buy garbage submarines from the Brits, subs we end up towing home, subs with diesel engines, the morons. And we send our armed forces half way around the world to protect merkins from enemies merkins made, not enemies we made, so the merkins won't destroy our economy and/or invade us. Yes, Fabiano, I hope you find the aliens. Maybe they will neutralise the merkin arsenal, restore democracy, free the merkins and spare us from their barbaric attacks. Then we will have funds for supercomputers for the universities and I will be able to stop crunching.

That's the one, crunching for solutions is why we are here.

The world is becoming more and more capitalistic. Really there isn't much you can do, besides sit and do nothing, that wont make someone money.
