Number of new users

Clearly, the rate of of new users has declined. Does anyone have experience with the early days of seti@home or folding@home? I'm wondering if this grid effort is following the same type of 'profile' for acquiring new members.

Obviously, one concern could be the earlier glitches, but seti or folding could have had as many or more [I simply don't have any data].

I'm also wondering about whether this effort is competing with seti and folding for members or is it expanding the total number? My perception is that folding and seti were basically word of mouth [and, mainly in the techie/geekie group?]. While the initial announcement for this effort had wide play in the media, maybe we're stuck at a 'zero-sum' game with folding and seti [without more media communications].

Re: Number of new users

We still picked up 610 new crunchers yesterday so don't be too down hearted that will add another 222650 members by this time next year.

grid.org performed 252 years 213 days of processing yesterday 3 years and 7 months after it's official launch around April 2001

World Community Grid performed 43 years 140 days of processing yesterday just 18 days after its official launch on the 16th November.

grid.org's processing power does not seem to have been affected by the arrival of WCG in fact it's been recording some record high's. So the global community donating to causes like this one is still on the increase. The results of which can only be good news all round.

To have attained around 17% of the power of grid.org (measured in cpu years) in only 18 days is a very impressive result. applause

fj I hope this is some encouragement to keep on crunching for WCG

Regards
Dave

BTW: see my other posts RE: FASTER Computing and LINUX Help Needed.
ps: I'm pizzed at http://kb-upgrade.mozillazine.org for deleting my req./msg crying for immediate help [to install FIREFOX and KOPPIX-folding@home ] on my IDLE LINDOWZ/$100-Wally-World-Machine ! confused

Re: Number of new users

Some more stats

Yesterdays stats were for a Saturday - the trend is usually that Saturday and Sunday are the lowest performing days of the week due to the fact some members are not at work and the PC they are using to contribute to WCG is the office PC.

However even with this being the case the equivalent of 13839 2.6Ghz PC's contributed their proccessing power yesterday to WCG. (I think that's amazing that the average PC on WCG is a 2.6Ghz P4 ! Wow)

If each of those 13839 2.6Ghz PC's offered an average of 90% of their possible power to the Grid (Which I would say is on the low side) then together we have provided 64.77 Tereflops of truely super supercomputer power to be made available to complete this reaserch (I know, I know, you'll all post back saying what about all that redundancy Dave we have process each WU around 5 times to make sure each of those 5 results returns the same data - Yes this is medical science we are carrying out here so the accuracy of the results are V important as they will affect people lives so redundancy is a necessity)

Still 64.77 Tereflops is a serious amount of raw number crunching power to put in the hands of the researchers at ISB. To put this in perspective the world fastest supercomputer is currently BlueGene/L which can produce an average of 70.72 Tereflops of number crunching power.

We have 389 new members to welcome on board the project today - get out there spread the word - remember all those people you have convinced to join in know someone else who's PC could be roped into the cause and so on and so on

Beware Crunching is Addictive

Dave
