Guys?
----------------------------------------It finally happened. After 6 hours of not using the air-conditioning, my primary workstation suffered a big burnout(to put it lightly). I'm not sure whether it's a capacitor meltdown, a power supply blowout, or a processor overheat, but it quit all of a sudden, it sure smells, and even the casing is too hot to touch for more than afew seconds. You'd think having 10 fans and spending 90 bucks on a qaud-heatpipe cooler stack would help, but without air-conditioning, it's fried wood. Details will come in soon once the computer cools down enough to touch and analyse, courtesy of my secondary workstation. Meanwhile, for those people suffering 40-degree plus weather, don't even try turning off your air-conditioning. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 2, 2005 8:45:42 AM] |

First stats from the battlefield:
Temperatures relative to b.t.: RAM: cool southbridge: cool Northbridge: hot Processor fin stack: hot GPU: lukewarm Hard drives: very hot DPS: warm SATALink: Lukewarm Main power off. All fan cables are good. Immediate survey reveals no oddities. HDD w/ last recorded temperature of 105 degrees now disconnected. All external USB unplugged. Non-CPU capacitor banks show no signs of damage. Will try powering-up. |

Results of power-up:
First attempt, Failed. All fans turned on, but BIOS did not boot. Second attempt (reset button), Failed. Same as above. Third attempt, off-and-on, reconnect overheating hard drive, passed. Power supply and U-PLUS DPS power regulator are functioning. All fans, etc, functioning. Smell still present. Core temperature with WCG: 58 degrees with a/c. Suspected over 65 without a/c. Core temperature w/out WCG: 40, and still falling. All voltage readings except VCore are *too low*, except for the case of -12 rail, too high. Could have some capacitor/short-circuit somewhere that could have been the cuase of the burnout. Will try checking the problem hdd and rewire SATA. In seperate news: Secondary workstation network failed. Am posting this on primary workstation. |

Wow Orca, it does sound as if you have had major problems. Are you seriously overclocking this machine ?

It's actually an automatic overclock. The higher the load, the higher it overclocks, to a maximum of 25%, but I limited it to 10%. It suppossed to stop overclocking when the temperature goes too high, or the VCore voltage goes too low. The highest it goes is 3.3 Ghz form 3.0 Ghz, or $110 of extra value. But I can literally crank up to 4 if I override it manually. Of course, then I'd have a severe overheat problem, so I don't do it, never dared.

Well, I broke the record for lowest pointage in 1 day - 160!.
I'm not sure, but I think my second computer ran into network problems, or maybe one of my family members did something to it, and my primary computer is suspended from heavy workloads until it proves its stable. ![]() |
