Clean living 'kills' cancer - study
Healthier living could prevent about a third of the most common cancers in rich countries and about a quarter in poorer ones, international researchers said on Thursday. Better diets, more exercise and controlling weight could also prevent more than 40 percent of colon and breast cancer cases in some countries, according to the study which urged governments and individuals to do more to cut the number of global cancer deaths each year..... |

Thousands of labs do research on cancer and fortunately progress is made:
----------------------------------------Enzyme behind cancer spread found breast cancer Breast cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body Scientists say they have identified an enzyme that helps cancer spread around the body. Cancer metastasis, where the cancer spreads from its original location, is known to be responsible for 90% of cancer-related deaths. Institute of Cancer Research scientists have found that an enzyme called LOX is crucial in promoting metastasis, Cancer Cell journal reports. Drugs to block this enzyme's action could keep cancer at bay, they hope. read on : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7813072.stm

Early results favorable for 5-day radiation t...rly stage prostate cancer
Preliminary results show that a shortened course of radiation therapy for prostate cancer called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) provides good PSA response for early-stage prostate cancer and has the same side effects as other treatments, according to a March 15 study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). Study authors caution that further follow-up will be necessary to establish that SBRT is as effective in the long term as other proven treatments. Radiation therapy is an effective way to treat localized prostate cancer. Proven successful treatments include brachytherapy (seed implants) where radiation sources are placed directly into the prostate and external beam radiation therapy where doctors give small daily doses of radiation to the prostate, five days a week, for eight weeks to give enough radiation to kill the cancer cells while sparing nearby healthy tissue..... |

Eating mushrooms daily 'may cut breast cancer risk by two thirds'
Scientists found that women consuming at least a third of an ounce of fresh mushrooms every day were 64 per cent less likely to develop a tumour. Dried mushrooms had a slightly less protective effect, reducing the risk by around half. The study, carried out in China, also showed women who combined a mushroom diet with regular consumption of green tea saw an even greater benefit. The risk among women in this group was reduced by almost 90 per cent.. |

Prostate cancer screening for men 'should be introduced to UK'
Routine prostate cancer screening in the UK should be reconsidered in light of new evidence showing that it saves lives, a charity is claiming. A major European study found that death rates from the disease could be reduced by around 20 per cent by national screening. If deaths from prostate cancer in the UK were cut by 20 per cent around 2,000 lives would be saved each year The Prostate Cancer Charity said the current policy not to fund NHS prostate cancer screening should now be revisited |

25-year-old rows across Atlantic alone
After almost 3,000 miles of rowing, bouts of seasickness, equipment failure and salt sores, Paul Ridley is back on land. On day 88, Ridley, 25, completed his solo rowing trip across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the youngest American ever to do so. "I'm exhausted. Overwhelmed with all the excitement from my arrival," Ridley told CNN. "Physically feeling good but will be feeling a lot better when the soreness starts to heal and once that happens I will be back to fundraising because cancer research is still in need of funding, so we still have a lot of work to do." For nearly three months, Ridley has been rowing up to twelve hours a day on the 2,950-mile journey to raise cancer awareness and hopefully raise money for cancer research. His organization "Row for Hope" was inspired by the death of his mother from skin cancer in 2001.... |

Cambridge experts find two new breast cancer genes
London (PTI): Two new breast cancer genes, of which one reduces the chance of developing the disease while the other increases it, have been identified by an international team of scientists led by Cambridge University researchers. The new study, published in Nature Genetics, found that one of the DNA segments increases breast cancer risk by about 12 per cent in those who carry one faulty copy of the gene, and by 23 per cent if they carry two mutated copies. The other region reduces the risk by about 4 per cent in women with one faulty copy of the gene and by 11 per cent with those with two mutated copies..... |

From the White House
NATIONAL CANCER CONTROL MONTH, 2009 THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ______________________________________________________ For Immediate Release April 1, 2009 NATIONAL CANCER CONTROL MONTH, 2009 - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION We have achieved remarkable progress in the fight against cancer. Miracles in medical research have helped us understand how to prevent, detect, and treat cancer more effectively, and Americans are now more aware of how to protect themselves from this disease. Despite this progress, cancer continues to kill more Americans than any other malady but heart disease. Marking National Cancer Control Month, we recommit to the battle against cancer and emphasize the promise of medical research and the healthy steps Americans can take to protect themselves. To gain new ground in cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, my Administration will continue to press for increased support for research at the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and academic and other institutions. The Federal Government plays an indispensable role in investing in this research, which will save and improve lives for generations to come. As researchers work daily to better understand this disease, Americans can take steps to decrease their risk of developing cancer. Individuals of all ages should seek regular and appropriate check-ups. These check-ups should include screening, such as mammograms, the Pap test, and tests for colorectal cancer, all of which can help detect cancer during its early stages Read more ... |
