How Do I?

This is the first post from a brand NooB, so expect some stupidity.

I am in the process of transfering most of my Mhz from a different project to this one and partly due to vision problems, partly due to IMHO an insane lack of "stickys" am having trouble finding the info I need.

1. How do I monitor multiple compuers, most headless drones, in UD?

2. Is there a Log file in UD? This has proven essential in the past for troubleshooting.

3. As I have discovered that there are problems with HPF2, (the prime reason I'm here) I have temporarily disabled that from my profile. When and how will I be notified of its resumption?

4. How do I identify the project number that I am working on? Needed I'm told in case of uncooperative (stuck) work.

5. Is there a way, without using BOINC that I can run multiple instances of UD on an Hyper Threading computer?

That's about all the uninformed questions I can think of atm. Fear not there will undoubtedly be more.

Thanks in advance.

Re: How Do I?

1. You can't.

2. No.

3. An announcement will appear in the Member News forum.

4. You just need to provide your Device ID, which is shown on the main UD screen.

5. No.

All of which sums up to a huge argument to use BOINC. It works far, far better if you have many computers to manage.

Re: How Do I?

Hi ozylynx,
The UD client was developed as a simple interface for the home user. Keeping this in mind:

1. How do I monitor multiple compuers, most headless drones, in UD?
My Grid - Device Manager - Device Statistics lets you see the last time that each computer uploaded results (and then downloaded a work unit). It does not tell you which project or work unit. But this time stamp, plus the Device ID, allows a staff technician to determine this information when included in an error report. If you use BOINC and BOINCview, you can monitor all this yourself.

2. Is there a Log file in UD? This has proven essential in the past for troubleshooting.
No. BOINC has log files but not UD.

3. As I have discovered that there are problems with HPF2, (the prime reason I'm here) I have temporarily disabled that from my profile. When and how will I be notified of its resumption?
There is a lot about this that will be showing up soon in Member News and Known Issues. We are working on debugging this problem.

4. How do I identify the project number that I am working on? Needed I'm told in case of uncooperative (stuck) work.
The Device ID is shown in your client view screen. That plus the time you downloaded the unit lets the overworked grid tech access the database and figure it out. BOINC lets you read the work unit name directly and lists the Device ID at the start of the messages log.

5. Is there a way, without using BOINC that I can run multiple instances of UD on an Hyper Threading computer?
No. UD is specifically engineered to shut down multiple instances. This is because it uses a global synchronization variable that multiple instances would overwrite. Anyway, is it really smart to run multiple threads of BOINC on a hyperthreading CPU? You only have one FPU and jamming 2 giant programs into 1 L2 cache might slow things down unless you are talking about a Xeon with a really large cache.

Ask away!

Thanks Lawrence and Didactylos, for the prompt reply.

You both make a good case for switching to BOINC.
Not quite what I would have expectedform the UD Forum smile

My problem I guess is that BOINC is unknown tome, other than the numerous snide buckettings I've seen elsewhere. I'm somewhat dubious about venturing into that domain.

Are there plans to bring UD, up to speed?

Things like a log file are completely transparent to the end user and would facilitate the provision of perhaps even a third party systems monitor.

Also I'm uncertain of how effective the monitoring via the website can be, again probably just my NooBness, but I have introduced a fourth computer today, it has returned 1 or 2 work units, it shows up in one section of my devices but not in the "installed devices" as of yet anyway.

Different point scores appear in different areas etc., How can I make head or tail of all this given that situation? There will soon be 9 computers in the array with a couple more on the not too distant horizon.

I guess it comes down to this: I want to help. I don't want to BOINC. I can't effectively help without a realtime monitoring system for UD, especially given the reports I've seen of "stuck" work not resetting itself. It could be days or weeks between times that I scrabble around the back of a drone and plug a monitor in to it.

No flame here just an attempt to explain where I'm at and try to make the odd, hopefully helpful suggestion.

Re: How Do I?

UD is proprietary software, and is only updated by United Devices. WCG did a licensing deal with them that gets them a branded version and access to the API, but they really have very little control over the agent itself. UD's response to previous issues leaves little hope that they will add new features unless in response to a serious security bug.

BOINC is open source, so it's easy to improve and provide utilities for. Just installing and running it is no more complicated than UD, but there is a lot more complexity available if you need it, and it's infinitely easier to troubleshoot.

There's nothing stopping you from trying BOINC out and removing it later. It will even work in parallel with UD, but that's not a recommended configuration.

The only score that counts is the one shown on the website.

Re: How Do I?

Hello ozylynx,

I have multiple computers (18) running the UD client. All except two of them have no screen, keyboard or mouse. They are all Windows XP-Pro machines and I manage all of them from my main PC using the in-built Remote Desktop facility. Provided you allocate fixed IP addresses to each machine it is easy to take remote control of whichever PC you want and see what is happening to the UD agent.

In my own case I find it sufficient every two or three days to click on "Device Installations" under My Statistics in My Grid on the WCG website to see when each agent last returned a result. Looking at the bottom of the list I will find any agent that has been running longest without returning a result. If it looks as if any agent hasn't returned a result for a suspiciously long time I then log on to the appropriate PC and investigate.

I usually log onto each machine routinely every week or so to confirm all is running well and to see if any Windows Updates or other housekeeping needs doing.

I wonder if this kind of regime might be a manageable solution for you?

Kind regards,
David.

Re: How Do I?

ozylynx,

davidhobbs's regime is not a bad idea but it lacks the simplicity of a BOINC plus BOINCview setup. To monitor his drones davidhobbes has to login to each machine separately plus check Device Installations. You can do far less work and get more information if you use BOINC and BOINCview.

BOINCview is a third party application that allows you to monitor BOINC on all the other machines on your network from 1 console. With BOINCview you don't have to login/logout from each drone. You simply use BOINCview's GUI to select which machines you want to monitor. You do that once for each machine. Then BOINCview monitors BOINC on all those machines and presents all the details you will likely ever need on 1 screen. From that screen you can also manage each BOINC installation.

I don't know why you don't want to BOINC, ozylynx. Choosing UD over BOINC is like choosing a bicycle over an automobile for a long trip when you can afford either. Do you want the extra work the bicycle requires? Or do you want to get there fast and with as little work as possible?

Re: How Do I?

I am running BOINC and have tested several projects. I have used the UD interface also.

If you insist on staying with the UD interface there is an add-on product called UDMonitor. It is intended for queueing up multiple devices to process offline before calling in again.

Conversely, you can just stay with one device if you want and still run UDMonitor. The log in UDMonitor does a nice job of monitoring your checkpoints, with the timestamp for each and the time between them. In addition, the flask indicator changes from blue...to yellow....to red.....and back to blue when it just passed a checkpoint.

Re: How Do I?

I'm not 100% sure, but in my UD_Monitor days you could set 'back-up' and frequency thereoff. Doubt it works with these low checkpoint WU's, but it would be a boon if one could use that function to suspend a WU and resume it......the memory part would still be lost. At times i did use it to recover in periods where Windows had lots of BSOD's or selfboots corrupting a WU (Jan '02 / Mar '06)....restore with UD_Mon and resume, from last firm checkpoint?

Today, windows boots only, when i choose to boot it, which is when i found it save to ditch UD_Mon and moved in main to BOINCmgr and since mid june added BOINCView to the repertorium. Unfortunately, BOINCview does not log the credits per WU....keep on getting 'Result xxxxx Lost, but logged.....i.e. an all (BOINCVIEW) time list of the WU's completed, how completed (also the erred) and when, but not its credit claim or award......would you knoow a fix Dagorath?
