Based upon the intel-mac results being returned so far, the workunits are running in about 1/8th the time they were taking previously (in other words they are now running 8 times faster then they were when the were running under emulation). The computers we did testing on ran in 1/3 the time but the gain could vary by processor or memory. Thanks for the update! With the native processes I average about 4.5 hours per faah work unit on my MacBook Pro (2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM). Much more consistent with the results I was expecting. |

Excellent news on the Intel Mac binaries!
My Mac was previously typically taking over 24 hours for a work unit, and now it has just finished two FAAH work units in just over 4 hours.  |

So Sir Fraz, are u saying that extrapolated u would now be doing 12 FAAH's in a day on dual core, where previously 1, or was the 24 hours a single core indication i.e. 2 running on 2 cores thus 6x the past......if 12, i go and get one

A single core was taking ~28 hours in emulation mode per FAAH work unit on average, and now it is taking about 4.5 hours natively. I have my Macbook Pro Boinc client set up to use only one of the two cores; well, as it happens, the work units usually have more than a single thread, so normally some percentage of each core is used, adding up to 100% of a single CPU. It's set up like this as the memory hit of running two work units is rather large, even with a gigabyte of RAM. Plus, if you didn't know already, Macbooks and Macbook Pros run VERY hot when both cores are fully used for any length of time. I look forward to many more intel macs signing up! We now have intel-mac binaries available for FightAIDS@Home and Help Defeat Cancer. Great news. I like this project and hope to add a Mac Pro in the not too distant future. (2 fast dual core Xeons or 4 processors). In the meantime my Pentium M 1.73 and my old but still running iBook 600 (600 mhz G3) will keep on crunching. |
