Since the glitch with HPF2 I have switched my equipment over to the HDC project which by the way I am very happy to see (kudos to WCG staff) as that always was our teams main focus.
----------------------------------------Last night I went in and took a look at my results status and to my dismay there are quite a number of HDC work units that are reported as "invalid"? Is/was there a glitch with these units as well? I always worry that it's my equipment but I don't have that problem with faah units so I'm assuming it isn't at my end. These machines are more than adequate and surpass system requirements for that project I might add. |

SPEZI,
HDC is running very clean the error and invalid rate is lower then on FightAIDS@Home. I took a look at your results and all but one of your invalid results are on one specific machine so I would suggest taking a closer look at that machine. There isn't anything I can see on this end that is causing the error but you might want to run through the standard memory checks. Other folks here in the forums will be happy to help you out. Thanks for the response knreed.
----------------------------------------I just took a gander again and it seems things have improved. If I see anymore I'll recheck that machine but it is not overclocked and has 1GB of RAM in it running an AMD 1900XP CPU which has been very reliable. With FAAH I got the odd invalid as probably happens but for the most part the track record has been good. I don't know how many work units the machines download at a time but I thought perhaps the first batch it got went weird for some reason. Maybe something happened during download? Also what happens if a person has a machine in their herd that doesn't meet requirements and all a person has checked for projects is cancer? Will it download one of the other projects if a person checks that box allowing another project if the checked one is out of work? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by SPEZI at Jul 27, 2006 3:32:28 AM] |

Will it download one of the other projects if a person checks that box allowing another project if the checked one is out of work? I have no idea. My guess is that it will just pause until the HDC server queu runs out, then it will draw a unit from another project. Lawrence |

Hi Spezi, my reading is, and this is only valid for BOINC, that if you've checked the new box at bottom of My Project Options....:
---------------------------------------- If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project (this option only applies to BOINC agents). .....you would get other work if HDC in your example is the only ticked project. It will only get work the machine can handle! If i.e. you would have HDC+FAAH, it would only seek other work, if nothing for these are available etc etc. This option is not visible for those that do not have a BOINC device installed! Added: As per Lawrence proposition, it would be interesting to know if the new function will only pull work from 'other' projects, if the cache queue is exhausted. It'd be logical, if one has still say 1 day HDC work left, to not inject an FAAH at the time the machine calls for more WU's to queue. ciao

OK guys for what it's worth I can confirm that if a person is using the BOINC client and they have only HDC project work checked any machine in their herd that does not meet specifications will cease to crunch however if that same person checks the box allowing alternate work units if the chosen one runs out those machines will in fact download that work and continue to crunch.
----------------------------------------I just checked and on or about the 23rd I switched my project preferences to HDC only. After looking in on my results status I could see that three of the machines that I had enlisted from friends stopped putting out as they don't meet memory requirements. After I noticed that I went in and checked that box which allows alternate projects and I see those machines have shown up again and display FAAH work units as being in progress. A really good feature for those with multiple machines who prefer to focus on Cancer but don't meet system requirements on all their equipment. Good work WCG. :) |
