Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project. Through your participation and that of other community-minded individuals across the globe researchers will be able to perform complex analysis on cancer specimens using a much broader ensemble of experimental conditions than is possible using traditional computer resources. Both the technical and scientific teams for the project are delighted to have you join us in this undertaking. We sincerely thank you for your involvement and look forward to working with you!

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Hi djf, i think many here are looking forward to take this stealth decease on.

......strikes me that the 18:06 UTC stats updates are 20 minutes late and no other project announcement have been made.....all eager to hear about what it does, runtime, hardware etc, as HPF2 threw a lot of curve balls causing many machines to go pausing for prolonged times.....what about the pre-testing....what precautions were taken not to repeat the serious child deceases HPF2 suffered from?

If starting to send the first batches today, Wednesday, i think its much better than Friday night and have many swimming with bugs over the weekend!

Many thanks and good luck.

good luck good luck good luck good luck good luck good luck good luck

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Hi Sekerob,
I'll stick my oar in - capisce? The press announcements go out tomorrow (presumably in honor of my birthday biggrin ). So we are bringing the project online today. By the time the press announcements hit, we hope to have the HDC project up and running, the web site updated, and even some early project statistics.

The project requirements are surprisingly high. Ordinarily it takes about as much memory as FAAH (under 100 MB) but at intervals it uses another 400+ MB, so the memory requirements are going to be very high - roughly 3/4 GB. The work units are not that big. A typical download for the UD client should run about 1 MB, the uncompressed BOINC download should be about 5 MB. The results upload should only be about 0.1 MB. The web page listing the new requirements had not been updated before I started this post, so we shall see if I have it right or not.

It takes us a bit to get all the data updated across the site. The system requirements have now been updated and you can view them here:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

For the UD Agent:

For the Help Defeat Cancer project, the minimum requirements are:

* At least a 200MHz Intel Pentium™ processor or equivalent
* At least 750 MB RAM (virtual memory should also be enabled)
* 2000 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 500 MB available for use
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed
* Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP

For the BOINC Agent:

or the Help Defeat Cancer project, the minimum requirements are:

* An Intel or AMD x86 processor (For Windows or Linux) or Intel or PowerPC (for Mac)
* At least 750 MB of RAM (virtual memory should also be enabled)
* 650 MB of hard disk space available for use
* An Internet connection
* Operating System: Linux, Windows or Mac OS/X

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Okay, thanks Lawrence & Kevin,

meantime discovered already that the default profile had it added as an option, but not ticked... that's i think in mirror of what many expressed as a preference

certainly with the RAM requirements, taking away that discussion.....again, after deduction of RAM used by Video and also the Virtual Mem is an enablement requirements, but does not substitute RAM.

As for modern times, a 200mhz CPU will delight many who were scared off be earlier indications of equal or exceeding requirements, particular in the CPU field....the RAM is still hefty, but again, modern times, its not the cost, if one is willing to spend some money on a memory strip.

ciao and wish you all the best in juggling 4 project balls simultaneously.

peace

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

I'm not sure how many 200MHz machines will be capable of accepting 750MB RAM though. The RAM requirement is certainly a big disappointment for me.

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Aha, not enough ram............oh well.

*.......Saw that there was cancer work and in my excitement to get stuck into it I got WCG installed again and fired up a cache of slots.........that'll teach me for not reading sys requirements first.

Re: Welcome to the “Help Defeat Cancer” project

Great news that this project gets going. Huge memory requirements though. Most of my computers only have 512MB RAM, only 3 have 1024MB. But it's better than nothing! smile

Hopefully this project will attract lots and lots of new crunchers and will be well supported by the CA's and the scientists!

@Lawrence; congratulations with your birthday! cool
