BOINC graphics would be nice!

I know this has been asked - and answered before, but are there any BOINC graphics for FAAH and HPF2 on the horizon?

It has just occurred to me again because I have just re-enabled Climate Prediction after a 3 month rest (have you seen the size of CPs workunits?), and this together with the other project I run - MalariaControl.net - makes WCG the only one without some pretty graphics biggrin

MalariaControl are only in their BETA phase, and they managed it wink

I know the science is a priority, so just asking (again)!

For me, the graphic does not even have to be very pretty. Even a box with a few more status facts in it - text based even - would be interesting. Given the recent problems we have seen with stuck/errored workunits, this would be helpful to judge whether a WU has problems. Treat it as an "additional info display", rather than a graphic. This also gets round the limitations of BOINC's own limited status info.

Not yet, but there can be many things on that horizon. They have had higher priority things like fixing bugs in HPF2 and working on rollouts of possible new projects.

Malariacontrol closed off new members, so I can't see theirs. Several BOINC projects have graphics, and several others do not.

So did QMC@home.

Every responsible research leader I know would grasp every opportunity and use time for contribution applications and grant proposals. That much I know from more than ten years in different academic environments(before going into industry). Be aware that when an cruncher is recruited it is a small grant that is given you by the person allowing you to use his or her computer. And to make up a super computer many small grants are needed. In the recruiting or selling of the crunching idea a screen saver is a valuable marketing tool.
For me, the graphic does not even have to be very pretty.

But of course; the prettier, the better at least as a marketing tool.
Think of it as you do a grant application.
Given the recent problems we have seen with stuck/errored workunits, this would be helpful to judge whether a WU has problems. Treat it as an "additional info display", rather than a graphic.

That sounds intelligent to me. Information in this context is equal to inspiration.

What things are on the horizon?

OK bugs in HFP2, but what about FAAH? That has been stable for some time now. I suspect that what you mean is that there is an overall WCG policy decision not to bother too much with graphics!

Malaria control is not closed! It should be - they have reached their 2000 user BETA target. Actually, their graphic offering is (for me) a little TOO busy! It has great 3D representation of the days rolling along with sun and moon chasing each other across the landscape, with Mosquitos buzzing around! In the middle is a 3D graph which is rather too small, poorly scaled and not very clear. Still a very good effort for a BETA project!

The Climate Prediction people have it just right. Their display is very informative and clear with the right balance of information and graphics.

Our displays for the UD client were fine (as I remember them). Part of the design is already done therefore (in terms of the content, look and feel of the graphics) for BOINC.

I take Wood Choppers point about Marketing, but if this IS an overall WCG policy decision, this means they have probably already considered an dismissed this! So we are unlikely to see an elaborate graphics display. Maybe the thinking was that the display has to be astounding, competing with the rest (hence requiring much design effort), or else it would be negative in effect. I disagree. I would judge a display by how much it increases my understanding of the project science. So an information dispay with additional details about the Workunit and textual display of a few variables whizzing along would be fine. This in programming terms is a text box with a few print statements in it! Add a simple graph if possible - surely the science people build such displays and graphs themselves all the time!

Someone wrote, that one should not wake me from my slumber, well the Gentle Giant is awake and likes to inject into the discussion, that here on the forum i think Didactylos or LawrenceHardin brought up a 'simplified' and skinnable BOINC GUI a bit in image to the UD agent. Have a look. Also at BOINC website there was some discussion and mock up pictures. Wont be today, but its coming.

Enjoy Sunday, and hope the Madness In The Middle East Ends Before The Graphics Show Up.

It was not I. You are always welcome, awake or asleep. As is everyone, Gently Giant or otherwise. You go ahead and inject as mich as you like. smile

I did searches on "BOINC Graphics" before I made the post - I did not find the stuff you mention. I'll look again.

Re: BOINC graphics would be nice!

Hello Dirk,
I mentioned Rom Walton's blog ( http://www.romwnet.org/dasblogce/ ) in another thread. It shows the BOINC graphics that the WCG is developing.

Thanks Lawrence. Sorry, I missed all this - been away from internet access for a while.

I also did another search of our forums and found the "BOINC - Coming Attractions" thread. I have never seen the Big D so dis-excited about anything! I cannot fault his analysis. I must add that word he used (and got away with) to the list of viable expletives! biggrin

It all looks far more showey that I was asking for!

Re: BOINC graphics would be nice!

I fear you are all confusing the BOINC Simple GUI with BOINC graphics.

The BOINC Simple GUI won't show the work unit graphics there, the picture in the middle is purely illustrative.

The normal BOINC graphics screen (and screensaver feature) will be avilable as normal (or not, if the project doesn't support graphics).

WCG will provide graphics as soon as they can, but personally I would consider it a minor miracle if we see them this year.
