Hey all. I have an update.
As of this morning EVERY single machine I have running BOINC has returned an "Error" condition, so it doesn't appear to be specific to that one first machine. I have a combination of hardware... an AMD 3800 Venice core, NO overclock, 3 Intel Northwood P4 machines, a Dell XPS Gen 2 laptop, an IBM ThinkPad, a Toshiba laptop and an older Intel P4 1.6 ghz machine. They've now all returned "Error" conditions. One might think that factors out the hardware, but they ALL do run Windows XP, and the return code says something about invalid environment... whatever that means. So.... it sounds like the mystery continues.... ???? I am getting valid responses, but the last 24 hours I went from 2 errors to 8. Oh, and I noticed something about "inconclusive"... apparently it can be a temporary status? I had a WU that was Inconclusive when I started this thread, but when I went back into my stats that WU is now flagged as Valid. Does this mean they received additional replies and now my inconclusive is proven valid? (A guess, but a fair minded one to me). Thanks again for everyone's ideas... and general sharing of knowledge as well. -jk Phoenix, AZ USA |

That's exactly right. Don't confuse Inconclusive results with Invalid results. Inconclusive just means there isn't enough data to finish validating it yet. It's like it was validated once, but didn't find three identical results, so it got put back into "Pending" again. Next time it is validated, it will either end up as Valid or Invalid.

Hi enlightenedpoint,
Oh, and I noticed something about "inconclusive"... apparently it can be a temporary status? You bet!. The status descriptions are defined in 'Start Here' (currently in the fifth post) at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=6105 Lawrence |

I have 2 dual-core AMD Opteron 939 machines crunching with BOINC and they continued to throw out invalids with Rosetta 5.07. I'm guessing about 1/3 of all results returned turned out invalid. They are both overclocked but passed all the standard stability tests and never had a problem with HPF1, FAAH, etc. Well, that makes me feel better. That's exactly what I'm seeing (except mine's an X2 4800+ instead of an Opteron). Thanks much for the report. |

Hmmmm... another interesting tidbit. Apparently you can be granted more points on a Valid status than the BOINC client had originally requested. I had three WU's where this happened. ![]() |

Or less! In fact, the median of the claimed scores is granted to all the results. By throwing away the high and low values, cheating is discouraged.
