Optimized Boinc Clients with HPF2

Summary:
Using 5.5.0 or any other "optimized" boinc client isn't going to crunch your work units quicker that I've been able to detect, nor is it going to get you awarded more points (because of the quorum system). The only thing that appears to be "optimized" is the speed of the benchmark. Thus asking for more points than you'll ever get.

Stick to 5.4.9

5.4.9, running great, credits asked for about 8 percent off of credits awarded.

"upgrade" to 5.5.0 with sse2 optimization, benches score doubles on whet and tripples on dry. For each completed WU asks for about 2x as many credits as it used to.

BAD NEWS: Never another awarded credit. Only inconclusive, error, and pending...

Disclaimer, as this was only 12 hours worth of data, the sample may not be large enough to come to accurate conclusions.

Re: Optimized Boinc Clients with HPF2

You are correct, an optimised BOINC will not crunch faster and the reason is because BOINC does not do the actual crunching. BOINC is simply a manager. It gets the work units (WUs) from the server and then calls other program(s) to do the actual crunching. When the crunching is done BOINC takes care of uploading the result and the crunch report to the server. BOINC is like most managers: it does very little work but it gets all the glory biggrin

The 5.5.0 is probably listed as Beta test software, though I must admit I haven't actually checked to confirm that. In any event we are strongly encouraged to use only the stable recommended version. The current recommended version is 5.4.9. Glad to hear you've returned to 5.4.9.

Re: Optimized Boinc Clients with HPF2

Additional question regarding the BOINC versions; Will there be a major update of the BOINC client soon? I mean, all the computers in my office run 5.2.13. Of course it doesn't make sense to update all computers to 5.4.9 if there will be an all new version soon. Please advice.
